Prague has always been regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The name ‘Cor Europae’ (Heart of Europe) probably dates from the country’s early history, in the thirteenth century, when the Kingdom of Bohemia stretched from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. This was a period of great prosperity, especially under King Wenceslaus II Přemyslid, and culminated with the reign of Charles IV, who was both King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Despite the fact that Bohemia was the centre of Europe and benefited from the presence of many scholars (more especially after the foundation of the university in 1348), the local culture also preserved an older tradition there. This can be seen in the beautiful repertory for the Advent and Christmas period that have survived in the sources of Prague Cathedral and the Benedictine abbey of Prague Castle. These sources make it possible to reconstruct the liturgy of the Feast of the Nativity as it was celebrated there, with organa and tropes in the tradition of twelfth-century music, at a time when the new Ars Nova style was flourishing elsewhere in Europe. It is this music that the wonderful voices of the Tiburtina Ensemble bring to life for us.

The dramaturgy of the project is inspired by the life philosophy of Hildegard von Bingen as is preserved in her musical and literary work. On the one hand we can perceive Hildegard as a mystic and saint woman, on the other hand as a strong abbess and politically gifted person. Those two points of view are the most important in the interpretation of her concept of human being. Her music and visions are full of humanity and divinity as well, it inspires me to call the concert programme “Ego sum homo” (I’m the man).

When, in 1872, the student Leopold Katz discovered in the attic of the presbytery in the South Bohemian village of Jistebnice an old manuscript of Czech songs, he might not have realised just how enormous its value was. Today, the hymnal, bearing the title "Jistebnický kancionál", is primarily known for containing the Hussite choral anthem Ye Who Are Warriors of God. (The melody has attained worldwide fame due to its inclusion in Smetana's symphonic poems Tábor and Blaník, parts of the cycle My Country.) Yet the most notable aspect of the hand-written hymnbook is that it features songs in Czech for mass and prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. It would seem that the bold project's aim was to make liturgy accessible to the wide religious community in their own language.

Thomas Campion, an English composer, lutenist, poet and physician who lived from 1567–1620, was one of the most prolific lutenists and poets of the Elizabethan era. During his lifetime he wrote a total of 118 ayres, which were published in five volumes. In addition to writing poetry collections and composing ayres, he also composed music for so-called masques. Campion wrote all the text templates himself, which he subsequently used in all his song collections. Although he was able to combine his lyrics with music better than any other English composer, his work has been criticized for a lack of creative originality and musical variety. In this respect he was often compared to his famous contemporary John Dowland. However, it should be noted that Campion, unlike Dowland, composed his works as an ardent music enthusiast and his main livelihood was not music, but medicine. With the passage of time, however, we can state with certainty that Campion's less complicated compositional style was unique and highly original. Many of Campion's songs transcended his conventional approach, and many became outstanding musical examples of lute and chant literature.
