Ben is different. His life is a universe all to itself, where he avidly plays his favorite on-line computer game in an attempt to train for and block out the reality of his daily experiences. Ben has Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism that prevents normal communication and makes him ideal fodder for all the school bullies. As the bullies' relentless attacks push him over the edge and out of control, his on-line dream girl, Scarlite, appears to him and helps him devise a perfect plan to confront the bullies and make them pay for their torment. Director Nic Balthazar's dazzling debut blends fantasy and harsh social realism, based on a true story, to bring us an utterly original and important film.

Built on an eclectic mix of originals and reimagined classics, the album examines the passage of time through the lens of Christmas, reflecting on memory, loss, and longing as it explores the variety of ways the yuletide season marks the chapters of our lives. The songs are playful here, full of humor and cheer, but they’re also laced with an inescapable sense of melancholy, a looming darkness that always seems to hover around the periphery of those late December nights.

Cowboy Justice (Remastered) is Ben’s 6th studio album and features Ron Horton (trumpet & flugelhorn), Steve Cardenas (guitar), Ben Allison (bass & acoustic guitar), and Jeff Ballard (drums).

One night, after a set by my “Way of the Groove” band at Washington, D.C.’s jazz club, Blues Alley, the owner, Harry Schnipper approached me excitedly and exclaimed, “I finally figured out what this music is: it’s mad scientist music and you’re Dr. Frankenstein!” The tune that had him most worked up was a small group version of The Misinformation Age which I adapted for big band for this recording. I like the idea of my office (where I write) being my mad scientist’s laboratory where I’m creating things that will eventually have a life of their own…things that some might find strange, unusual, or possibly even monstrous…though hopefully most find to be fun and exciting. Some of the ideas on this recording are among the most complicated I’ve ever put to paper, so I thought this title worked pretty well. Of course the real fun happens when I get to leave my evil lair and make music with my good friends, who just happen to be some of the best large-ensemble jazz musicians on the planet.
