« A thoughtful chill runs through the music of Benoît Delbecq, a French pianist of investigative temperament and crystalline technique. There’s a ton of compressed energy in his playing, but he projects an unflappable calm ». These lines from the New York Times in 2010 by jazz critic Nate Chinen offer a pertinent description of Delbecq’s music. Delbecq is a multi-awarded Parisian pianist and composer, a type-setter who persists in developing his ideas among which a very rhythmic approach that brings the soul of jazz to John Cage’s prepared piano. Delbecq may prepare just a few strings with wood sticks then sit at the piano become a percussion-and-piano ensemble. Delbecq is curious with sound, the rhythm of prose, and mutating loops of sound fabrics. His musical thrust continues to weave some outstanding and compelling tapestries for our delight.

Crescendo in Duke is jarring. Not in a ridiculous or repellant kind of way— after all, it’s a collection of Duke Ellington compositions. Safe enough. It’s of the high quality usually associated with French pianist Benoît Delbecq, too. It’s just that it’s so straight-ahead, it’s all but unrecognizable as a Delbecq album.

Delbecq’s made a name for himself with his prepared piano, creating a catalog of unorthodox jazz that can easily silence any grumblings about the gimmicky nature of mucking around the inside of a piano. But aside from a loop that underlies “Portrait of Wellman Braud” and a quirky take on “Whirlpool,” there’s not much of that here. Just the usual big band business with a more modestly-sized band.

“Recorded at the Innovations concert series in Montreal in 2005, this trio teams Evan Parker with the established duo of Benoit Delbecq and François Houle, who have been together for a decade. The pair is known to play a wide variety of music—from classical to world to jazz and improvisation—all of it extremely well. Both technically and temperamentally, they are suited to Parker; the threesome sound well-adjusted to each others' instincts, and should as this was not just a one-off meeting; there are plans for the threesome to tour in 2008. ”album review on AllAboutJazz.com

This rare double trio configuration brings together two pianists, two bassists and two drummers; the result is a multi-faceted collaboration with opportunities for various combinations of duos and trios as well as full group interaction. The music has its moments of abstraction, its moonlit soundscapes, but also embraces a jazzier aesthetic on the Monkish/Lacyish Night for Day. The two fantastic pianists who sparked this 2013 release, both winners of the Grand Prix du Disque for jazz, are Fred Hersch and Benoît Delbecq. In 2008 Hersch attended one of Delbecq's gigs in New York. Mutual fans who wanted to work together on something "novel and a bit outrageous,” Delbecq came up with the idea of a double trio.

Though he has been one of the avatars of prepared piano for over a decade, Benoit Delbecq has only now released a solo album. Nu-Turn (Songlines) is well worth the long wait, a strikingly well-defined recording featuring an immaculate Steinway D piano. Throughout the album, Delbecq's affinity for African and Asian folk music (which is most vividly evident in the timbres created by his driftwood preparations, which suggest indigenous percussion and string instruments) and his Paul Bley-derived lyricism and floating pulse constantly dovetail about one another. This accentuates the exotic, mysterious qualities of Delbecq's music that, in the past, have been tempered in other settings. Propelled by a cool attack, the music lingers in the air like incense, pungent but not overwhelming. Nu-Turn is an excellent way to become familiar with one of the most distinctive pianists on the international scene.

Five years after their first collaboration, French pianist Benoit Delbecq and Canadian clarinetist François Houle team up on this 2002 release which features pieces for piano or prepared piano and clarinets (sometimes two played simultaneously) and a solo improvisation by each musician. Composition and improvisation flow together into a dreamlike continuum where jazz and new music intersect.

The Sixth Jump is the first trio release from French pianist Benoît Delbecq, released in tandem with a companion solo album on which Delbecq deconstructs some of the same songs he interprets here with the trio. This recording features intense yet supple polyrhythmic improvisations built up in interlocking layers and cycles, woven together with the bass and drums and a distinctive melodic/tonal sense that balances consonance and dissonance with timbral shifts in many intriguing ways. The Sixth Jump was named one of the 12 best records of 2010 ("Choc de l’année") by Jazzman, the leading jazz magazine in France.
