The prolific Domenico Alberti squeezed a surprising number of works out of a short and eventful life, achieving fame across Western Europe, particularly for the so-called ‘Alberti bass’, an arpeggiated style of left-hand keyboard playing. Yet his presentday reputation does not equal these heights, his fame largely limited today to his Eight Sonatas. This recording puts this to rights, showcasing Alberti as a composer who deserves to be remembered for centuries to come, as a musical poet possessed of remarkable invention and imagination. Alberti’s compositions display the simplicity and sensitivity of Clementi, the vigour of Mozart and, in the briefest of moments, an almost Schubertian or Chopinesque pre-Romanticism. His keyboard compositions are generally individual movements or twopart toccatas or sonatas, the whole full of melodic echoes and intentional reworkings, which form intriguing bridges between the pieces. The three distinct periods in the composer’s output of keyboard music are mirrored here by the use of organ, fortepiano and harpsichord (all of which Alberti would have had to hand in his day) – corresponding also to the period practice of ‘playing on all manner of instruments’, with individual pieces often not tied down to a specific instrument. This combination adds a talented keyboardist and international award-winner Manuel Tomadin who has a particular interest in Renaissance and Baroque music and historical organs. He brings all of his expertise to bear on this superb album. This 4 album set contains the complete keyboard music by Domenico Alberti, a First Recording.

Despite its hefty, hardbound, 300-plus-page book and attendant top price, Jordi Savall's Venezia Millenaria has appeared on commercial sales charts. It's easy to see why: this is one of Savall's most ambitious concepts, covering the promised millennium of the history of the city of Venice, Italy, plus a bit more as a bonus, taking you up to the end of Venice's independence. The book contains enough information that it could serve as the basis for a little travelers' course, but there's also a case to be made for just listening and letting a thousand years of music wash over you.

Andromeda Liberata is a serenata, or two-part ceremonial cantata with a hint of allegorical storyline, given in Venice on September 18, 1726, in honor of visiting Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. Most early eighteenth century works of this type are so courtly, genteel, and refined that often their common destiny is to languish and gather dust on the shelves of some archive rather than be promoted and performed. Andromeda Liberata is an exception in that parts of it are traceable to the pen of one Antonio Vivaldi, whose varied and outstanding contribution to other types of works, including opera, are well noted elsewhere. Vivaldi, however, is not solely responsible for the score; although the musicological jury is still out on many sections contained within Andromeda Liberata, among the suspect roster may be found other prominent names (Tomaso Albinoni, Nicola Porpora, and Antonio Lotti) and some lesser ones (Giovanni Porta and Antonino Biffi).

"Anticlockwise" is one of those few albums where power meets melody. Produced and mixed by Bob Gramm and Lorenzo Deho' (Time Machine) "Anticlockwise" features aggressive guitars, easy-to-listen vocal lines and, above all, massive drum work. Songs composed in an extremely mature way gather in an excellent album that one could hardly detect as a debut work. Properly arranged and rich of "catchy" riffs, this album offers the listener an incredibly wide range of sounds and musical situations. Sudden keyboard breaks ease the pressure generated by hammering combinations between guitars and drums, linked by appropriate bass lines.
