"Moon Beams" is a pivotal recording from the newly reformed and influential jazz ensemble, The Bill Evans Trio. Following the death of long-time band member Scott LaFaro, Bill Evans enlisted bassist Chuck Israels to perform on this soothing tapestry of jazz ballads. The subtle, yet mind-blowing set, included the haunting Evans' original, "Re: Person I Knew", a jazz rendition of "Stairway to the Stars" and the sublime, "Polka Dots and Moonbeams".

Moon Beams was the first recording Bill Evans made after the death of his musical right arm, bassist Scott LaFaro. Indeed, in LaFaro, Evans found a counterpart rather than a sideman, and the music they made together over four albums showed it. Bassist Chuck Israels from Cecil Taylor and Bud Powell's bands took his place in the band with Evans and drummer Paul Motian and Evans recorded the only possible response to the loss of LaFaro - an album of ballads. The irony on this recording is that, despite material that was so natural for Evans to play, particularly with his trademark impressionistic sound collage style, is that other than as a sideman almost ten years before, he has never been more assertive than on Moon Beams…

Evans, born in New Jersey in 1929, was by far the most individual and influential pianist to emerge during the 'hard bop' era of late-Fifties jazz. He created his own niche and, rather than try to fit into any particular style himself, allowed his own to fit in with others should they be interested. Evans was one of very few white musicians who most (though not all) black musicians were willing to accommodate. Enjoy 5 of his original jazz albums from the Riverside years from this superb 5 disc collection: "Waltz For Debby", "Moon Beams", "How My Heart Sings!", "Interplay" and "Know What I Mean?".

After bassist Scott LaFaro’s tragic death in a car accident in July of 1961, Bill Evans was devastated and didn’t feel capable of forming a new trio. The late 1961-1962 formation heard here was a transition group, with bassist Chuck Israels attempting to fill the void left by LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian still on drums (in 1963 he would be Breplaced by Larry Bunker which set the stage for Bill Evans’ second well-known trio). Presented here are the two studio LPs by the Evans-Israels-Motian group, originally issued on the albums Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings!
