Philly boys Al and Birdy became friends in high school despite the extreme difference in their personalities, Al being the popular and athletic extrovert, Birdy the antisocial "weird" introvert. Al gave Birdy his nickname because of his fascination - obsession really - with birds, especially with flight. Al and Birdy have just completed their service of duty in the Vietnam War and have returned to the States. Al sustained some serious physical injuries, which required major reconstructive surgery to his face.

Renaud Garcia-Fons is well familiar with world music fans, as the 5-string acoustic bass player has a large number of Mediterranean world fusion recordings with many guest musicians. Dorantes [David Peña Dorantes] is less well known here. A nuevo flamenco pianist and composer, nephew of cantaor El Lebrijano, Dorantes has elegant classical style, influenced by de Falla and the Impressionists, but is well versed in jazz, too. Indeed, his piano work is an extraordinary blending.

Part of country music's late-'90s crop of female crossover stars, Jo Dee Messina's appeal nonetheless remained more with country fans than pop audiences. Messina was born August 25, 1970, in Framingham, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Holliston. She sang in musical plays starting at age eight but discovered country music at age 12 and got hooked on the likes of the Judds, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton.
