Green Delay is the hotly anticipated new album (2009) by bassist Jasper Høiby's stunning piano trio, Phronesis. Phronesis made a splash in 2007 with its debut release, Organic Warfare . Now, Green Delay sees Høiby return to mine the same rich seam of plush melodies and seductive grooves, revealing a maturity and emotional depth beyond his 31 years. Although officially the second release by Phronesis, Green Delay was recorded by a brand new line-up with Høiby and drummer Anton Eger, now joined by the dazzling young British pianist Ivo Neame. Together, they create music that will delight fans of Esbjorn Svensson Trio, the Avishai Cohen Trio and Keith Jarrett and the ice cool sound of ECM records.

Though some may still consider them Radiohead mimics, obviously Muse continues to strike a nerve with their alternative hard rock audience, here releasing their third album of heavy guitars, haunted harmonics, and paranoid musings in Absolution. Frontman Matt Bellamy and company stick to the same disturbed, and sometimes disturbing, formula that's worked in the past: the emotional intensity and style of Radiohead, a rock thunder descended from Black Sabbath, and the baroque drama of Queen. Longtime producer John Leckie sits this one out, and in steps indie über-engineer Rich Costey. With Costey manning the desk, the music feels more polished and slick, but less epic and raw…
The Blackout and Love at First Sting Scorpions are obviously the best known - when they ruled the MTV airwaves and arenas worldwide due to such snappy hits as "No One Like You" and "Rock You Like a Hurricane." But as longtime fans will attest, the group was a veteran act by that point, having already released quite a few albums (which had slipped under the radar for many). And for those who aren't aware of this era, these albums were a lot heavier than the more melodic direction the group later specialized in, as evidenced throughout the 17-track import collection Hot & Slow: Best Masters of the 70's. As its title suggests, the band has been splitting its time between rockers and more tranquil fare since the beginning. Also of note are the exceptional guitar skills of Uli Jon Roth, who was subsequently name-checked by quite a few metal guitarists as a prime influence. Hot & Slow: Best Masters of the 70's is a fine comp of early Scorpions.
