During the two decades that followed the end of World War II in 1945, independent record labels flourished. Many of these micro labels succeeded by specializing in specific types of music that the more bland-minded giants—RCA, Columbia and Decca—largely ignored. In the process, these small labels wound up establishing beachheads for new music genres and cornering the market for the genres' best musicians and singers.

In de ruim 50 jaar dat de TOP 40 bestaat zijn er maar liefst 2.500 Alarmschijven gekozen. De eerste Alarmschijf stamt al van 1 november 1969 en de 2.500e wordt op vrijdag 30 maart 2018 gevierd door Radio 538. Ter ere van deze mijlpaal is een schitterende 5-CD box samengesteld met een selectie van ruim honderd titels uit deze gigantische lijst van Alarmschijven. De tracks op deze CD geven een goed beeld van de verscheidenheid aan muziek over deze complete periode van 1969 tot nu. Uit ieder jaar staat er minimaal één alarmschijf op de box.
