Rock and roll is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, from African-American musical styles such as gospel, jazz, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues, with country. While elements of rock and roll can be heard in blues records from the 1920s and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until the 1950s.

Vintage Music is a compilation series released by MCA Records in 1986. There were 10 volumes when released on vinyl and cassette but the compact disc versions put together two at a time, so there was a total of five CD's in the series: 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and so on. This series was remastered by Steve Hoffman from the best available master recordings, with a few songs taken from versions that had not been heard before. Notable is the version of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" used here.
