John Coltrane's debut for the Impulse label was a bit unusual, for the great tenor and his quartet were joined by a medium-sized backup group on Eric Dolphy arrangements of "Africa," "Greensleeves," and "Blues Minor." "Africa" in particular is quite memorable although Coltrane would not pursue any further recordings in this direction in the future, making this a change of pace in his discography. Allmusic 4.5*/5

Reached #1 on Billboard Jazz Albums 1983

Keyboardist Bob James and acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh struck gold with this session, recently reissued on CD. The formula hasn't changed much in succeeding years. Both Klugh and James are capable musicians; they demonstrated on this collection of light, innocuous melodies and occasionally interesting backbeats a high degree of professionalism. Klugh is a first-rate guitarist whose solos are concise and nicely delivered, but frequently sound thin. James' piano and electric keyboard playing is a puzzling combination of flawlessness and lifelessness.

Oh, the 80's, how I miss 'em!!!
Here is one of the masterpieces of Pop from the 1980's, orchestrated by none other than Mr. Leo himself, Roland Orzabal, and a crew of top rate musicians, among them the incredible Oletta Adams.
Reportedly costing about 1 million GBP to make at the time, it is one of the few albums that actually sounds like a million bucks!!!!
Also featuring the dubious honor of having up to five 24 track machines synched together to get 100+ separate tracks (let's not even talk about the patch bay!!!), the production here is beyond stellar.
Mixed by David Bascombe in "SuperBascombevision" (or something like that) , there are also mixes by Bob Clearmountain("Woman In chains") that define "State of the Art Recording".
When I got his LP , it was in NM visually, but it was the clickiest thing ever. Fortunately, ClickRepair came to the rescue.
The "sheen" that permeates this LP is nowhere to be found on any CD version, so , if you TRULY want to listen to this album for the FIRST TIME EVER, as it was supposed to have sounded originally, download and listen to this sonic marvel!

Since Relics is a compilation and not a regular studio album, it tends to be overlooked when thought of as one of Pink Floyd's better releases. It might not be regarded as a classic psychedelic masterpiece in the manner of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and it certainly won't ever achieve the multiple platinum status of Dark Side of the Moon, but it's a pretty good place to start with the band's early catalog. Originally issued in 1971, Relics culls from the band's first five singles (two A-sides and three B-sides, including the non-album pop classics "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne") and picks album material that capitalizes on the band's versatility while making it a thoroughly palatable listen. From Piper, you get the goofy childishness of "Bike" and the mesmerizing "Interstellar Overdrive," one of the band's trademark instrumental freak-outs; "The Nile Song," taken from the More soundtrack, is one of the heaviest songs the band recorded. A little bit of everything that made early Pink Floyd can be found here. Without a doubt, the disc is an essential part of the band's discography, not to be disregarded in lieu of its overlap with studio album material. Allmusic.

A Bob James compilation such as this was long overdue. Rhodes Scholar collects 22 tracks he recorded for CTI and Tappan Zee, ranging from One in 1974 to One on One in 1979. The music is arranged chronologically for the most part, with derivations made for musical continuity. As much as his music, however, is the manner in which this comp showcases his development of the Fender Rhodes piano's sound as jazz-funk began to emerge in the mainstream. Disc one commences with the nocturnal, break-driven groove of "Nautilus" (the sampling favorite was originally the last track on One). While that cut was expected, it is juxtaposed with the lengthy arrangement masterpiece that is "Valley of the Shadows."

Bob James is a prolific, best-selling, Grammy-winning composer, arranger, producer, and pianist. Along with Grover Washington, Jr., he is known as one of the fathers of smooth and contemporary jazz. His music seamlessly melds genres from bop to pop, from classical to R&B via relatively simple, accessible, and elegant melodies with rich harmonies and multiple sonic textures, often anchored by lithe, funky grooves. In addition to gold- and platinum-selling albums on his own and in various collaborations, he issued four numerically titled albums for CTI in the mid-'70s that successfully melded jazz, pop, and classical styles with sharp arrangements, accessible melodies, and funky grooves. Those four albums are all considered shining examples of early jazz-funk and have been abundantly sampled by hip-hop DJs and producers…
