Bobby Patterson's I Get My Groove From You is a gritty 20-track collection of the Texas soul singer's '70s recordings, 19 of them recorded between 1971-1973 for Paula, one ("Right Place, Wrong Time") for All Platinum in 1977. He never had any hits, but Patterson's low-down delivery and the backing band's tough-as-nails sound deliver an enjoyable punch. He wrote most of the tunes here, focusing mainly on extracurricular affairs and their fallout.

Like many other Dallas-based rhythm & blues musicians, Bobby Patterson is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who continued the deep soul tradition of people like Otis Redding, Joe Tex, and Wilson Pickett. But unlike some of these other singers, Patterson has worked in all aspects of the record business: as a songwriter, producer, promotion man, and label owner. Rare and famous this 1972 disc from overlooked Texas soul man Patterson has a bit of everything, gliding freely between easy soul (“Recipe for Peace”) and down-home funk. Check out “How Do You Spell Love” though, a cool, mid-tempo groover. Then there’s “Right On Jody“, another , funky soul cut. And then there’s “This Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto” – which isn’t quite as nice as it sounds but vaguely lives up to its potential.

Bobby Patterson is a journeyman soul veteran who has worked as a producer, songwriter, and radio disc jockey as well as cutting a fistful of fine R&B tunes for Abnak, Jetstar, and Paula Records in the '60s and '70s. If Patterson never quite broke through to stardom, he clearly learned a lot during his heyday and hasn't forgotten a bit of it; I Got More Soul! is that rare example of a soul veteran cutting a new album that sounds every bit of fresh as the sides that made him a cult hero back in the day.

Having grown up in the Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas music seen since 1970, Bobby brought his music to Austin, Texas in 1972 and became a house regular at the legendary Antone’s rubbing shoulders with the likes of Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Luther Allison and many other giants of the blues. He definitely possesses a hard Texas attack in his guitar playing that is chock full of bent notes. At times you can detect traces of Stevie Ray Vaughn in his husky vocal delivery. It is never mimicry, but the natural quality of his voice. He is backing is the usual bass-drums-keyboards with occasional female vocals by Lisa Marshall. Nothing over produced here. All but two songs are originals.

Bobby Mack is another one of those blues guitar greats who has received no attention over in the United States. I first came across him on a "Where Blues Meets Rock" collaboration (He has subsequently appeared on 4 different volumes of "Where Blues Meets Rock"). One listen to the song "Pourin' Rain," and I was instantly hooked. After hearing the energy and pure emotion on that track, I bought "Highway Man," Mack's debut album, and I have not been disappointed. Not only is his guitar playing emotive and rockin', but there is also some hot organ on the album as well. "Highway Man" was produced by Jim Gaines, a man who produced Stevie Ray Vaughan's "In Step" album, as well as several Santana and Steve Miller releases.
