Booker T. & The M.g.s + Soul Men

Melting Pot from Booker T. & The M.G.’s marked a turning point for the influential instrumental group. Released in 1971, it was the final studio album to include the original lineup of the longtime Stax house band (Booker T. Jones on keyboards, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass guitar, and Al Jackson Jr. on drums). Comprised entirely of original material, Melting Pot finds the four-piece digging deep into some expansive Memphis soul jams.

McLemore Avenue is a 1970 album by Booker T. & the M.G.s, consisting entirely of mostly instrumental covers of songs from the Beatles' album Abbey Road (released only months earlier, in September 1969).

Concord Music Group continues its Stax Remastered series with the release of Booker T. & the MGs’ 1962 masterpiece, "Green Onions". The record has been remastered by legendary engineer Joe Tarantino and remains one of the most exciting instrumental recordings of all time. "Green Onions" features the classic line-up of Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr. and Lewis Steinberg. “Green Onions” is included on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

Released in January 1970, this legendary R&B recording is a tribute to The Beatles' Abbey Road. The MGs infuse the songs with their unmatchable musicianship and tight, funky grooves, resulting in one of their greatest recordings. About as original as an album of covers gets!

On May 31st, soul connoisseurs can get their hands on the Soul Explosion album, back on vinyl for the first time since 1969. As part of the label’s “Made in Memphis” reissue campaign, the lacquers for the 2-LP set were cut by Memphis-based engineer Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl and pressed locally at Memphis Record Pressing (MRP). Soul Explosion offers a sampling of the label’s biggest hits and stars of the day, with Eddie Floyd, the Mad Lads, the Staple Singers, Albert King and more. The second disc of the set includes a selection of rare tracks, many of which are exclusive to this collection. These include the Bar-Kays’ “Hot Hips,” Ollie & The Nightingales’ “Heartache Mountain” and Eddie Floyd’s “It’s Wrong To Be Loving You.”

In the summer of 1964, Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records attended a DJ convention in Miami. Henry Stone, the record producer from Florida, suggested that he stop by a nightclub called "King of Hearts" to listen to a local singing duo, known as Sam & Dave.
