Jackie Leven was a larger than life modern troubadour who led a full on varied life with personal trials and tribulations of addiction to drink, heroin and his attempted murder along the way. He sadly died from cancer just over 10 years ago and this album features 22 artists recording covers of his memorable songs. You do not need to know the story of his life to appreciate the beauty of these songs. They are a unique brand of moody magnificent celtic soul, sometimes celebrating the joys of the countryside, other times tender love songs, but also his unique take on life. Often complex and sometimes melancholy, deep and reflective.

On Once Around The Room ECM recording artists and key jazz musicians from several generations unite in a small ensemble to celebrate the musical legacy of drum icon Paul Motian in a big way. Joe Lovano and Jakob Bro lead a party of seven through fiery originals that recall the idioms and idiosyncrasies which Motian brought to light over six influential decades behind the drums. Lovano and Motian had been intimate colleagues for many years with their most notable collaboration being the groundbreaking trio featuring Bill Frisell – the lineup released three albums on ECM. Jakob Bro on the other hand made his ECM debut on Paul’s album Garden of Eden (2006). On Once Around The Room, compositions by Joe and Jakob appear alongside collective improvisation and Motian’s own “Drum Music”, seamlessly tied together and developed by an accomplished musical collective with stalwarts Larry Grenadier, Thomas Morgan and Anders Christensen respectively on bass as well as drummers Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy.

A multitude of classic rockers/prog rockers have united to cover the Wall in it's entirety, under the title Back Against the Wall. Led by producer Billy Sherwood, a rotating case of musicians was assembled to make anyone with a well-worn copy of Tales of Topographic Oceans drool with excitement - Yes' Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire, Alan White, and Geoffrey Downes; King Crimson's Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and John Wetton; Styx's Tommy Shaw; ELP's Keith Emerson, and Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, among countless others. Interestingly though, it can be argued that the Wall was Pink Floyd's least "progressive" album, as the group focused on tight song structures - obviously inspired by the then burgeoning new wave and punk movements. The performances are expectedly spot-on (and it's quite impressive how they re-created all the sound effects/spoken word bits so precisely), and stick very close to the originals - except for a Chris Squire-led take of "Comfortably Numb," which adds a few extra bits.
