In 1958 the drummer Guillermo Barreto decided to form a Quinteto Instrumental de Musica Moderna, a name which later, fortunately, was simplified to Los Amigos. It was not a permanent formation, since its members were continuously sought after, either as accompanists for solo voices or as members of other groups and orchestras. However, the group was active for twenty years. Los Amigos were Barreto, Frank Emilio, Gustavo Tamayo, Tata Guines and Papito Hernandez (who was substituted by Cachaito Lopez). The group's repertoire was made up in general of well-known pieces from the popular Cuban repertoire, although they made a bossa nova record in 1967 and left several recordings created from improvisations over a rhythmic base. Roberto Garcia (bongo), Helio Valdes (violin) and Jesus O'Farrill (flute).

A leader of the Tropicalia movement in Brazil in 1967 and 1968, along with artists like Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and other musicians mixed native styles with rock and folk instruments. Because Gil fused samba, salsa, and bossa nova with rock and folk music, he's recognized today as one of the pioneers in world music. A multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Gil joined his first group, the Desafinados, in the mid-'50s and by the beginning of the '60s was earning a living as a jingle composer. Although known mostly as a guitarist, he also holds his own with drums, trumpet, and accordion.
