Classical / Romantic / Concerto / Piano

Maurizio Pollini, still one of the undisputed stars of the piano when these performances were recorded in 2011 and 2014, had already recorded the Brahms concertos several times before. One might expect a kind of late-life summation, but this is nothing of the sort. Instead, Pollini seems energized by the chance at an unusual pianist-conductor interaction, something arguably more important with Brahms than with any other composer: the motivic web can be knitted in various ways. Pollini's lithe elegance, little diminished in his late sixties, stands in sharp contrast to the big-boned dramatics of Christian Thielemann, leading the venerable Staatskapelle Dresden, and many passages sound totally novel.

As an eleven-year-old in 1895, Wilhelm Backhaus met and performed for D'Albert, Grieg, Nikisch and Brahms, among others. Here was a pianist who shunned hectoring gestures of the late Romantic era for economy and purposefulness. "His facial expression always remained steady, showing an unceasing concentration on the sounds his hands were coaxing from the instrument with such concentrated energy. Everything lay in the act of playing, just as the preoccupation of a great painter or sculptor would be not with technique as such, but with craftsmanship - that is, skill not as an end in itself, but as a vehicle for the idea - giving pleasure to those who were able to watch and hear how a true master would execute even difficult passages effortlessly," writes Walter Frei. This 2-CD set brings together Backhaus's recordings with Karl Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic of the two Brahms Piano Concertos.

Gilels had immense physical power and impeccable control, but he was also capable of exquisitely refined poetry and had an acute perception of the lyrical impulse lying behind even the most assertive of Brahms's writing. The firmness of attack and the depth of sound that make his (and the Berlin Philharmonic's) playing so thrillingly dynamic can be offset by the most poignant of delicate gestures. There is undeniable grandeur to these readings, but with those additional qualities of wise thinking, generous expression and artistry of great subtlety, these performances are in a class of their own.

With Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 by Johannes Brahms and Piano Concerto No. 2 in B major, Op. 18 by Hermann Goetz, pianist Andrea Kauten juxtaposes the works of two masters, who strike the musical-historical situation in the vacuum of the Beethoven succession illuminate in the second half of the 19th century. Both composers see themselves as traditionalists who want to create something new in proven forms. There is, on the one hand, the genre of a young composer who, early on, too soon as a harbinger of hope, mercilessly fails the work. And second, the work of a regionally recognized talent, which can attract the attention of the great German music world before his untimely death.

Just in time for his 80th birthday, Daniel Barenboim was honoured with the Gramophone Award 2022 for his life's work. The career of the famous Argentinian-Israeli pianist and conductor began early, Wilhelm Furtwängler already said about him: "The eleven-year-old Daniel Barenboim is a phenomenon". Later, as chief conductor, Barenboim led world-class orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and, since 1992, the Staatskapelle Berlin. With the founding of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, the UN peace ambassador united musicians from Israel, Palestine and the Arab states. As a soloist, the pianist has worked with renowned conductors; with Sir John Barbirolli, for example, he recorded Brahms’ piano concertos. Barenboim's discography is impressive; with his first wife, the cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, he formed a musical dream team. Other legendary recordings of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Bruckner and Wagner were made with the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic, among others.
