As a “wunderkind” he sat on Pietro Mascagni’s lap, he accompanied the “Dying Swan” danced by the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, and Fritz Kreisler confessed to the young violinist that he did not know what else to teach him. “No one places Schneiderhan in the company of Kreisler, Heifetz, Huberman, Szigeti or Stern, yet he was as ‘complete’ a violonist as any of them, maybe even more so", wrote the English critic Tully Potter. Wolfgang Schneiderhan’s playing was noble, balanced and sober, but at the same time intense, heartfelt and fetching. Artistic distance and immediacy of expression were not opposites for him. He attached great importance to reliable musical scores and placed himself at the service of the music – qualities that would later become important for historical performance practice. In short, a fascinating artist to be rediscovered.

This 5CD set features the then Deutsche Grammophon "house fiddler" in brilliant performances of Vivaldi, Tartini, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Martin Violin Concertos. In some of my previous reviews of box sets in the OM series, I have been critical of what the powers that be at UNI have done in terms of their selection of material, but here they got it almost perfect.

The Brahms double concerto is simply in a class of its own with all musicians solely concerned with getting to the essence of the music and the way they play is simply sublime. I would also place this version of the Beethoven triple concerto above the celebrated EMI performance by Karajan, Oistrakh, Richter and Rostropovich which I also have. Fricsay and his soloists put the music first in a way true musicians know how to without having to resort to any gimmick of any kind . Here, tempi, orchestral dynamics and balance seem to happen in a most natural ,simple manner ,allowing the music to flow to the point of timelessness.

The stature of Johannes Brahms among classical composers is best illustrated by his inclusion among the "Three Bs" triumvirate of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Of all the major composers of the late Romantic era, Brahms was the one most attached to the Classical ideal as manifested in the music of Haydn, Mozart, and especially Beethoven; indeed, Hans von Bülow once characterized Brahms' Symphony No. 1 (1855-1876) as "Beethoven's Tenth." As a youth, Brahms was championed by Robert Schumann as music's greatest hope for the future; as a mature composer, Brahms became the most potent symbol of musical tradition for conservative musical journalists, a stalwart against the "degeneration" represented by the music of Wagner and his school.

Wilhelm Furtwangler left six recordings of Brahms' three concertos. This CD contains two remarkable recordings. Violin Concerto (with Yehudi Menuhin and Orchester der Luzerner Festspiele(Luzern Festival Orchestra)) is very important document. Menuhin plays very confidently unlike later recordings(Especially first movement's cadenza by Kreisler and intro of last movement). And Furtwangler made huge scale in orchestral parts very naturally.
