A mainstay of the New York scene since the '90s, organist Brian Charette has a worldly view on music that makes it hard to contain all his pent up musical energies in a conventional way. This partly explains why his recent spate of records for the Posi-Tone label seemed to satisfy while still leaving one with the nagging feeling that Charette has so much more to say then can be contained in the radio-friendly time limits set by the label. This very fact makes his recent self-released set Kurrent the breakthrough offering that we have all been waiting for with baited breath. It's a diverse and disparate recital that manages to cover a whole lot of ground while still retaining a cohesive whole and identity. That is a task easier said than done and that makes this disc all the more satisfying.

Nobody who wields an instrument of any sort can truly escape the gravitational pull of history. There are many who try to fight it, but better to embrace what came before, acknowledge where a sound or concept originates, and use that knowledge as both a port of arrival and a point of departure. There are no severed ties between past, present, and future; there are only visible and obscured links.

I came to the Hammond organ quite by accident. I was a pianist from an early age and moved to NYC after college in 1994. I had planned on becoming a hot shot pianist but was starving in the beginning. To make ends meet, I started taking Chitlin Circuit blues gigs with artists like Percy Strothers and Lee "Shot" Williams. I was just 21 years old and got my first credit card which I maxed out immediately getting what was brand new tech at the time; a portable Hammond XB2 and Leslie speaker which I was going to use on the tours. As I was unpacking the stuff when it arrived in my kitchen at 96 St. Marks Place in the East Village (The building on the cover of the Led Zeppelin album, Physical Graffiti), I got a call from Frank Bambera who is a great jazz and latin drummer to play at The St. Marks Bar on the corner of St. Marks and 1st Ave.

Piano has always been part of the package on saxophonist Mike DiRubbo's albums. Still, when DiRubbo made his Posi-Tone debut with Repercussion in 2009, he left the piano behind, relying instead on some harmonic underpinnings from vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Now, on his follow-up disc for the label, he moves into different piano-less territory with his first organ trio record. DiRubbo digs in on these nine original tracks, which shy away from organ group stereotypes. DiRubbo penned two-thirds of this material, with organist Brian Charette providing the other three tracks, and the majority of the songs lean heavily on their rhythmic foundations.

The sky is the limit when tenor saxophone virtuoso Doug Webb turns his attention toward the "Bright Side" on his seventh release for Posi-Tone. Everything swings steadily as Webb plays with remarkable technical precision and a manifest knowledge of his materials. His tone is robust and extraordinarily well-centered, his articulation sharp, and his command of the tenor saxophone complete. Nevertheless, he is more than a mere technician, for his artistry is also considerable and this album is a crowning achievement for an artist who is as substantial a musician as jazz has ever produced. Along with the able assistance of an all-star group of label mates – who are of course all leaders in their own right – including organist Brian Charette, guitarist Ed Cherry, drummer Steve Fidyk, and special guest trumpet sensation Joe Magnarelli, Webb has fashioned a shining diadem of melodic jewels across a wide spectrum of styles and sounds! Critical listeners and casual fanatics everywhere will shine with intense delight as Webb soars onward and upward to new heights with "Bright Side".
