Geraldo was one of the major players amongst the dance band fraternity during the nineteen thirties and forties. His approach was always meticulous, suave, polished and personal. He was always immaculately dressed and presented a smooth image to the world. During WWII he and his orchestra emulated that of Glenn Miller, taking to the road to entertain the troops at home and abroad where he established an enormous following and much goodwill. His orchestra was always popular and attracted the best musicians even employing one of Glenn Miller's best arrangers Bill Finegan. His vocalists were always of the highest quality, they included Al Bowlly, Eve Becke, Carole Carr, Cyril Grantham, Dorothy Carless, Len Camber, Archie Lewis, Cavan O'Connor, Birrel O'Malley, and Monte Ray. Geraldo died of a heart attack while on holiday in Vevey, Switzerland on May the 4th 1974, but his music lives on, as this CD testifies.

Previous entries in Ace's Black America Sings series have focused on Bob Dylan and the Beatles, but also Otis Redding – a singer/songwriter who shows up on Bring It on Home: Black America Sings Sam Cooke singing "Shake," a song that became more identified with Otis than Sam. This alone suggests how great Cooke's legacy is: he wove his way into the very fabric of pop culture, quite clearly influencing generations of soul and rock singers, but also shaping how R&B could cross over into pop, along with the parameters of how black musicians could set up their own independent enterprises in the music business.

Whether recording as a solo performer, a member of Stealers Wheel or as one-half of The Humblebums, the late Gerry Rafferty was always a master craftsman, leaving behind a dazzling portfolio of songs. Although early success eluded him, it was during his time with the nominally folk-oriented Transatlantic label that Gerry learnt his craft. As most fans will be only too aware, those early recordings have been repackaged on a regular basis over the last four decades or so with varying degrees of care and attention.

Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and 24 bit remastering. Genius work from trumpeter Blue Mitchell – one of his most solid sides as a leader from the 60s, and a well-deserved treasure in the Blue Note catalog! The album's quite different than the straight soul jazz of Blue's early days on Riverside – or the more arranged dates of the late 60s – and it features him moving in a soulful, lyrical, modal style – quite similar to Horace Silver in conception, but with a fresh execution that's mighty nice – and which marks Mitchell as one of the fresher trumpet voices of his generation!
