The Monzas (named after the car "Corvair Monza Spyder") started in 1961 in North Carolina with Ward May, Skip Henshaw, Nelson Miller, Roger Mercer, Sharon Copeland (née Henshaw), Linda Quinlan, and Bing Greeson. Their primary goal was to play dances at local high schools and private parties. A very simple beginning to an extraordary era. There were several changes in personnel over the 10 years together. Big John Thompson joined in around 1963 to lay the bass track down on "Hey I Know You" and he just stayed. Mickey Coombs and Johnny Andrews came in around 1963-64 and Rick Mitchell came in around 1966. Mike Griffin was added on Sax in 1965. Sammy Fowler came in around 1966, with Billy Carden, Don Baker, and Nelson rejoining in 1967-68.

When most people think about Nigerian music, the first thing that comes to mind is Lagos, the country's main commercial center, the glittering megacity that spawned Yoruba-speaking music luminaries such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Sir Shina Peters and Wizkid. But Nigeria is a country of rich diversity, especially in its music: From the Igbo highlife and rock bands of east-central region, to the deep Edo roots rhythms from the midwest, to the keening, ornamented Fulani melodies of the north. But one region whose music has remained largely under-explored is the south eastern land of the Efik and Ibibio ethnic groups in Cross River and Akwa Ibom State, the region colloquially referred to as "Calabar." A cradle of culture, this region was one of the earliest outposts of Nigerian popular music. Its primordial rhythms traveled across the Atlantic during the slave trade to provide the part of the foundation for Afro-Cuban grooves that would go on to influence the development of jazz, rock & roll, R&B and funk.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive's Four Wheel Drive album is most often overlooked, mainly because all of the attention was focused on the singable "na na na naa"'s of one of B.T.O.'s biggest hits in "Hey You." But the rest of the album is made up of the band's lunch-pail rock & roll sound, combining ample amounts of factory-made blues to street-dirty guitar rock. Although it can't really hold a candle to Not Fragile, B.T.O.'s best album, there's still a fair amount of well-played radio rock to hold Four Wheel Drive up.

The elusive Chicago harpist's one and only full-length album, originally issued on Steve Wisner's short-lived Mr. Blues logo and later picked up by Rooster Blues (but not available on CD as yet). Cut in 1975, this set shows that Charles never left the 1950s stylistically – backed by a nails-tough combo, he pays tribute to both Sonny Boys and his ex-boss Jimmy Rogers while betraying more than a hint of Little Walter influence.

Every Todd Rundgren album seems to have a gimmick, and on this one, which inaugurates his recording relationship with the Forward subsidiary of Rhino Records, the trick is that he recorded almost four hours of musical fragments of four to eight seconds each and put them on an interactive CD so that they could be combined in a nearly infinite number of ways. If you have a CD-I, that is. If you only have a regular old CD player, this non-interactive version presents 10 songs and six variations on them. Rundgren has added rap to his arsenal, his lyrics are more political, and many of the tracks seem aimed at the dance floor. Sounds like music designed to fall through the cracks, right? Rundgren fans will be put off, while the new jack swingers won't bother to listen. But the real problem is that it's just not very good. (By the way, with this release Rundgren anticipated Prince's decision to rename himself in a weird way: he officially became "TR-I," for "Todd Rundgren-Interactive.") (On June 7, 1993, Forward released No World Order–"Lite," an alternate version of the album's 10 tracks, through mail order at a midline price.)

When Barrett Strong sang Money - that's what I want! the R&B singer from Mississippi touched a raw nerve in the public consciousness. We can all be high-minded moralists and the idea of singing the praises of filthy lucre can seem distasteful even outrageous. Yet there was cause to smile and give way to popular sentiment when Barrett spoke so shamelessly of his basic needs. Let s face it; money need not be the root of all evil. It can mean the price of a cup of coffee and even a roof over ones head. This treasure house of songs presented by a richly endowed depository of artists all dealing with the issues raised by the need to work for your money. You can bet your bottom dollar that most of us can relate to that!
