The progressive rockers who emerged in the '90s and 2000s ranged from time-warped artists who faithfully emulated the prog explorers of the '60s and '70s to artists who combined prog rock with '90s/2000s alternative rock and were not oblivious to life in a post-Nevermind world. This best-of collection, which spans 1999-2008, makes it clear that the Pineapple Thief falls into the latter category; founder/leader Bruce Soord appreciates Pink Floyd's classic '70s albums, but the fact that he enjoys Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon doesn't make him any less appreciative of Nirvana, Radiohead, or melodic industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails…

KGLW’s 18th studio album, Butterfly 3000, might be their most fearless leap into the unknown yet; a suite of ten songs that all began life as arpeggiated loops composed on modular synthesizers, before being fashioned into addictive, optimistic and utterly seductive dream-pop. The album sounds simultaneously like nothing they’ve done before, and thoroughly, unmistakably Gizz, down to its climactic neon psych-a-tronic flourish. This is undoubtedly their most accessible and jubilant album to date.

Every Sun Ra album is unique. Yet even by Ra's standards, DISCO 3000 is an outlier. However, it sits comfortably in the Sun Ra discography — because it's weird.

In the winter months of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but impossible to find. With the re-release of DISCO 3000 one of the most celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. This release, and it's companion MEDIA DREAMS, capture a side of Sun Ra's work - small ensemble, close form, original composition, rather minimal - that is otherwise under-represented.

French composer, keyboardist and guitarist Philippe Grancher is a musician those familiar with the French music scene most likely will connect with blues, as he's been a rather succesful purveyor of that kind of music for the last couple of decades. But this veteran musician, born in 1956, first honed his skills on a rather different kind of music. In his late teens Grancher became fascinated with the, at the time, state of the art synthesizers. And his experiments with these instruments ultimately lead to the recording and release of a full length album, 3000 Miles Away. The album is an experimental affair fusing classical piano, synthesizer and guitar into sparse progressive rock compositions.

Because it's been almost three months since they released a new album, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced they'll be back with Butterfly 3000 on June 11 via their own KGLW label. It'll be their 18th album and according to the press release it's a suite of 10 songs that "all began life as arpeggiated loops composed on modular synthesisers" before being fleshed out and transformed by the six-piece band. The band describe this one as "melodic + psychedelic."
Apart from announcing that it's coming, the band are not playing the usual promo game of releasing a bunch of tracks before the release date, instead just letting the whole thing drop on 6/11. They're not even sharing the album art (which is a autostereogram designed by regular collaborator Jason Galea) or the song titles, just listing question marks by the track numbers.

Common Saints’ debut, ‘Cinema 3000’. A record as vast and ambitious as its title might suggest, it takes the hallmarks that have come to define the project - warm, luscious musicality; filmic sensibilities; positivity and a grounded sense of spirituality and hope. It’s an album with a considered point of view, both musically and lyrically; one designed, from opening track ‘Sweet Release’’s ‘70s psych-folk nods and multipart harmonies to closer ‘Sweet Surrender’’s acceptance of the passing of time, to really make you feel.

Underground Fire was released in 1969. It featured a very different sound for the Ventures, as they adopted more of a late-'60s hard rock sound. This was also the first Ventures album to features the Ventures originals on one side and the covers on the other side…
