Founded in 2018, the Dream House Quartet is bringing classical and contemporary music into completely new forms as a matter of course. The members can draw on decades of musical expertise: the two piano sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque - one of the most renowned piano duet who have never confined themselves to a single genre - are joined by Grammy-winning guitarist, composer and founding member of The National Bryce Dessner and composer, musician and producer David Chalmin, also on guitar. Together they perform radical commissions from visionary composers and key contemporary works from the past half century.

Rich in contemporary colour and contrast, LIFE is inspired by the Norwegian violinist’s experience of becoming a mother. Known for her vibrant and imaginative programming as well as her passionate and virtuosic playing, Samuelsen has created a kaleidoscopic musical reflection of some of the emotional discoveries that come with parenthood. The album presents music by Olivia Belli, Bryce Dessner, Ludovico Einaudi, Nils Frahm, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Mário Laginha, Hania Rani, Max Richter and Steve Reich, with a dash of Schubert also thrown into the mix. Samuelsen is joined on the album by a small group of fellow musicians, including the string players of Scoring Berlin, conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer.

My friend Clarice Assad called me out of the blue a few months after our album Confessions earned a GRAMMY® nomination. Clarice had written the title tracks on the album, which Laura Strickling sang magnificently. “Bob,” Clarice said, “I have an idea….” I have learned that anytime Clarice has an idea, I’m interested. “I wrote a piece for Takács Quartet and bandoneón virtuoso Julien Labro. It’s a wild piece. The five of them have been performing it all over the world on tour, and I think you would like it. Actually, I know you would like it. Julien also wrote a companion piece, and the third work is by Bryce Dessner. I think you know Bryce; he lives in Paris. What a trio!” I responded that it sounded wonderful. “I want you to record these three works, plus another piece I have in mind for violin and piano. When can we do it?” Hence began one of Yarlung’s most adventurous (and I hope you will agree, successful) collaborations in the label’s nineteen year history.
