Bud Spencerterence Hill

Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966) was an American Jazz pianist. Powell has been described as one of "the two most significant pianists of the style of modern jazz that came to be known as bop", the other being his friend and contemporary Thelonious Monk. Along with Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a key player in the history of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him "the Charlie Parker of the piano". ~ Amazon

Sonny Stitt (2006 Japanese exclusive limited edition 17-track 'K2 High Definition Coding' CD album, originally released in 1956, also featuring Bud Powell & J.J. Johnson with THREE BONUS TRACKS, presented in mini LP-style cardsleeve reproducing the original album artwork with 'Jazz' obi-strip.) Three classic Sonny Stitt sessions from 1949-50 are heard here in full. Stitt, who had been out of action due to his "personal problems," not only made a full-fledged comeback on these dates but debuted on (and stuck exclusively to) tenor rather than playing alto, where he was being assailed as a Charlie Parker imitator.

Francis E. "Bud" DeTar was a long time resident of Brockport, NY. Born in Albion, NY, in 1922 and died on November 23, 2008. A well known local musician, Bud was a graduate of Rochester's Jefferson High School (1938), SUNY Brockport and the Eastman School of Music. Bud was an Army combat veteran of World War II in Europe. He served on the faculty of the music department at SUNY Brockport. Throughout his life Bud was a performing musician and bandleader in the Rochester area, with The Dixieland Ramblers, The Gates Swingers and other popular groups. The concerts performed by The Bud DeTar Big Band at the SUNY Brockport campus, several seasons in the 1990's, were quite memorable.

Although serious fans and collectors will have little use for the disc, Ultimate Bud Powell is a solid collection of 12 highlights from the pianist's Verve recordings as selected by Chick Corea. For the curious neophyte, the disc offers a good overview of Corea's time at the label, featuring the pianist in a variety of different settings, including combos with Percy Heath, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, Ray Brown and Art Taylor. Certainly, the disc should be thought of as an introduction, not the final word, but on that level it works very well. ~ AllMusic
