Bud Powell was a jazz pianist of rare talent, perhaps unique in his ability to inject vocal inflections into his improvisational playing. He reached a peak by the late 1940s although sadly by the 1950s he seemed to be succumbing to the mental illness that had plagued him all his life. Unexpectedly his career had a sporadic revival after he moved to France in 1959. Cared for by a friend, Bud Powell still proved capable of giving performances occasionally as brilliantly fluent as his finest from the 1940s. One of these performances were immortalized on this recording from Jazzhus Montmartre in 1962.

Three overlapping groups are heard from here, and they revisit the repertoire of the McKenzie & Condon's Chicagoans of 1927 (playing new versions of the four songs originally recorded) and Bud Freeman's 1939-1940 Summa Cum Laude Orchestra. The two septets and the octet feature such immortal Condonites as tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman; Jimmy McPartland and Billy Butterfield on trumpets; trombonists Tyree Glenn and Jack Teagarden (who also takes some vocals); clarinetists Pee Wee Russell and Peanuts Hucko; pianists Gene Schroeder and Dick Cary; rhythm guitarist Al Casamenti (but surprisingly no Eddie Condon); bassists Milt Hinton, Al Hall, and Leonard Gaskin; and drummer George Wettling. The veterans were all still in prime form at the time, and they sound quite inspired.

Given that he was one of the primary architects of bebop—revered by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry, and so many others—it’s surprising to note that the piano giant Bud Powell only led one session with horns. On August 9, 1949, he, trumpeter Fats Navarro, tenor saxophonist Rollins, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes cut four tunes at WOR Studios in New York: Thelonious Monk’s “52nd Street Theme,” and Powell’s originals “Bouncing with Bud,” “Dance of the Infidels,” and “Wail.” Decades later, this session caught the ears of pianist, scholar, and JazzTimes columnist Ethan Iverson.

Lawrence "Bud" Freeman (April 13, 1906 – March 15, 1991) was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer, known mainly for playing the tenor saxophone, but also able at the clarinet. He had a smooth and full tenor sax style with a heavy robust swing. He was one of the most influential and important jazz tenor saxophonists of the big band era. His major recordings were "The Eel", "Tillie's Downtown Now", "Crazeology", "The Buzzard", and "After Awhile", composed with Benny Goodman.

West Coast jazz of the 1950s has long had a bad reputation in jazz history books and among East Coast jazz writers who have stereotyped it as an overarranged and bloodless music best heard in movie soundtracks of the era. In reality, it was a multifaceted style, a smoothing of bebop's rough edges that could often be hard-swinging even with its quiet rhythm sections. Two of the finest West Coast players of the '50s were Bud Shank and Bob Cooper. Shank, a cool-toned altoist who on this 1998 CD also plays flute and tenor, appeared on many dates with Coop, who triples here on tenor, bass clarinet and oboe.

Jazz / Bop / Piano Trio

Reissue with the latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. Strictly Bud Powell, in the best sense of the word – as the album's a sharp batch of trio tracks recorded for RCA in the 50s, and a great showcase for Bud's firey talents on the piano! The rhythm combo features bold work on drums from Art Taylor, alongside the bass of George Duvivier – but Powell's definitely the leading light here, as the album features some of his tremendously deft work on the keys throughout. There's a nice tension to the material – played with a strength that matches most of Bud's other work from the time – but a bit different than some of his other recordings for Verve and Blue Note. The set features 11 tracks in all – and titles include "Time Was", "Jump City", "Elegy", "Coscrane", and "Topsy Turvy".

Earl "Bud" Powell (1924-1966) is generally considered to be the most important pianist in the history of jazz. Noted jazz writer and critic Gary Giddins, in Visions of Jazz, goes even further, saying that "Powell will be recognized as one of the most formidable creators of piano music in any time or idiom."

Jazz / Bop / Piano Solo

These informal performances find the great but ill-fated pianist Bud Powell playing a series of relaxed solos in Francis Paudras' apartment in Paris. The recording quality is just okay, and there are some missteps in Powell's solos, but there are also moments of interest, particularly his striding on a few of the numbers. This CD is particularly recommended to Bud Powell collectors.

Unique, improvisational jazz saxophonist of many big bands, considered by many an equal of Coleman Hawkins on the tenor.
When Bud Freeman first matured, his was the only strong alternative approach on the tenor to the harder-toned style of Coleman Hawkins and he was an inspiration for Lester Young. Freeman, one of the top tenors of the 1930s, was also one of the few saxophonists (along with the slightly later Eddie Miller) to be accepted in the Dixieland world, and his oddly angular but consistently swinging solos were an asset to a countless number of hot sessions…

Jazz / Bop / Piano

After bop pianist Bud Powell died in 1966, ESP-Disk Records kept his name alive with a series of archival live recordings curated from the personal collection of his wife, Buttercup Powell. Unlike their higher-profile Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker series, which were of unfortunately varying (and quite often very low) quality, the Bud Powell sessions are uniformly fine, with the excellent Blue Note Café Paris 1961 a particular standout.
