Bernard "Buddy" Rich (1917-1987) is considered one of the best and most influential drummers in the world, not only among jazz drummers, but also for rock- and pop-stars such as Phil Collins and Led Zeppelins Jon Bonham. At twenty-years of age, the son of two vaudeville artists began his career as a jazz musician, at first in the big bands of Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey (including Frank Sinatra), Harry James, Woody Herman, and Count Basie. With the financial help of Sinatra, with whom he enjoyed a lifelong friendship, he founded his own band in 1946, which also featured him as a vocalist. Producer Norman Granz particularly appreciated Rich and his drumming and hired him for sessions with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, or as an accompanist on masterpieces by Louis Armstrong with Ella Fitzgerald. In addition to his famous encounters with Art Tatum, Lester Young, Lionel Hampton, Nat King Cole and Flip Phillips, Rich also played famous "duels" with his drum-colleagues Gene Krupa and Max Roach. His three albums as a vocalist are wonderful, with only a little something missing that would have made him Sinatras rival.

Buddy Rich, the most remarkable drummer to ever play jazz, can easily have his career divided into three. During 1937-1945 he was a notable sideman with big bands including those of Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, and Tommy Dorsey. In 1966 he formed his own successful orchestra that capitulated him to his greatest fame. During the 20 years in between, Rich led short-lived bebop big bands, a variety of combos, toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic, recorded with all-star groups, and had stints with the orchestras of Dorsey and Harry James. This seven-CD set draws its material from Rich's second period and it can also be divided into two. The first half has Rich recording for producer Norman Granz in a variety of combos.

Bernard "Buddy" Rich was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Rich was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He discovered his affinity for jazz music at a young age and began drumming at the age of two. He began playing jazz in 1937, working with acts such as Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James. From 1942 to 1944, Rich served in the U.S. Marines. From 1945 to 1948, he led the Buddy Rich Orchestra. In 1966, he recorded a big-band style arrangement of songs from West Side Story. He found lasting success in 1966 with the formation of the Buddy Rich Big Band, also billed as the Buddy Rich Band and The Big Band Machine. Rich was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. He was an advocate of the traditional grip, though he occasionally used matched grip when playing the toms. Despite his commercial success and musical talent, Rich never learned how to read sheet music, preferring to listen to drum parts and play them from memory.

As the Classics Chronological Series works its way into the early and mid-'50s, the magnitude of producer Norman Granz's achievement becomes increasingly apparent. Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time - Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Johnny Hodges, Lester Young - were signed by Granz at a time when many Afro-American jazz musicians were struggling to get steady work, and jazz in general was beginning to take a back seat to pop vocals, R&B and rock & roll. Drummer and bandleader Buddy Rich had only just begun to lead a big band when the post-WWII restructuring of the entertainment industry edged him out. He was able to continue making records by working with smaller groups, oftentimes at recording sessions supervised by Norman Granz…

The recordings in the present set are typically fluent, compelling De Franco music in a first-class small combo setting. Individually De Franco and Harry Sweets Edison blow with the confidence and assertiveness that have become their hallmarks. Kessel takes care of business, lying quietly in the background until it comes his turn to solo, then leaping out to have his say. Jimmy Rowles, Herbie Mann, Bob Hardaway, and the rest of the men playing here are deeply swinging in healthly, mainstream fashion. One of the attractions is the delicacy of some of the ensemble textures and the way in which basic harmonies have been amended to fit the character of these 1959 De Franco Septette. Theres a lot of great listening here whatever your bias.

Here is a beautiful partnership between one of the more individual tenors from the swing era the distinctive Buddy Tate, and the always swinging Harry “Sweets” Edison who got the most mileage out of a single note and is immediately recognizable within a note or two for his long-used repetition and simplicity.
