Carl Stamitzs Clarinet Concertos Nos. 3, 4, and 5 (as numbered by Friedrich Carl Kaiser) so far have not been available in a modern critical edition, which means that the recording premiere of these works on this album represents an important contribution to the reception and recognition of this composer. In aesthetic matters as well as in genre history and music history, Stamitzs clarinet concertos are of a significance that is not to be underestimated, and it is also mainly because of them that he continues to be remembered in todays music world.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & Edward Gardner - Mendelssohn in Birmingham Vol. 5 (2019)

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & Edward Gardner - Mendelssohn in Birmingham Vol. 5 (2019)
FLAC tracks | 01:14:49 | 302 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Chandos

Edward Gardner’s Mendelssohn in Birmingham series continues with an album that collects eight overtures. As on the previous volumes, a reduced-size CBSO joins Gardner in Birmingham’s Town Hall, where Mendelsohn himself conducted many of the UK premieres of his own orchestral works. Mendelssohn composed the majority of the works in the programme as concert overtures, spanning the length of his career, from the early Ein Sommernachtstraum (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), composed when he was just sixteen, through to Ruy Blas, written towards the end of his life. He composed two of these overtures as the opening movement of larger works: Paulus, his first great oratorio, from 1836, and Athalie, incidental music written for Racine’s play. The ‘Trumpet’ Overture is the earliest work here, written possibly to precede a performance of Handel’s Israel in Egypt, and allegedly the favourite, among Mendelssohn’s works, of Mendelssohn’s father!

17-year-old Andréas Perez Ursulet – a singer who is both baritone and countertenor – emerged as victor of the 2018 edition of Les Prodiges, the French TV talent show for young people with a classical training in music or dance. He first became fascinated by opera when he was just four years old. “People still see classical music as something you have to be chosen to do,” he says. “I want to show that it can be accessible to anyone.”

In the last years of his life, the composer, violinist and swordsman Giuseppe Tartini (16921770) laboured at a vast cycle of sonatas for solo violin. The resulting manuscript offers the most important composition for solo violin after Bach and, at six hours in duration, the largest integrated work for the instrument. This first complete recording is based on a fresh study of the source and includes a number of works deciphered from Tartinis shorthand and overlooked in earlier editions. These Little Sonatas tread a delicate line between Baroque formality and proto-Romantic passion, occasionally illuminated with an echo of the folk-fiddling of his Slovenian homeland.

Wong Hok-yeung opens the Hong Kong Composers Guild s RESONATING COLOURS 5 with Night Poem, a composition for cello and piano. Rhapsodic and ambling, the piece conjures nightly thoughts, welling up and vanishing with lifelike authenticity. Chan Chin-ting brings two pieces for solo violin: Cross Currents, an exploration of the violin's full tonal range, and Postcards, an assortment of "six miniatures/musical gifts," which can be played as standalone pieces, but also feature a common theme that unites them. Lee Kar-tai's Pyrus Flower in the Rain is a minimalist evocation of temporality.

Genre: Soul, Funk, Rhythm & Blues, Disco / Label: Kent Dance

Stunning soul from the deepest depths of the American underground – upbeat groovers that mix a clubby vibe with deeper vocals – but all without hitting a disco sound at all! Some of these numbers are from the years before Studio 54, but showcase a changing style of soul – more sophisticated, a bit more funk in the mix – and this fantastic blend of instrumentation, arrangements, and production – all of which give the songs a level of perfection that definitely deserves the "masterpiece" in the title! Most of these tracks are from rare singles, but a few haven't been issued before – and together, the cuts really show the ever-evolving understanding we have of classic soul – always shaped strongly by excellent collections like this.
