British blues-rock guitarist Peter Green first achieved recognition with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, in which he replaced Eric Clapton. Green founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967. As that band's first leader, he wrote classic songs including "Black Magic Woman," "Oh Well," "The Green Manalishi" and "Albatross." Green succumbed to drug and mental health issues at the height of Fleetwood Mac's early popularity and left the band in May 1970. Despite continuing health challenges, Peter Green reemerged as a solo artist in the late '70s. Comeback album In The Skies was Green's first record after 8 years in obscurity. Surrounded with longtime friends including Peter Bardens (Camel) and Snowy White, Green cut a mix of vocal numbers and instrumentals, composed songs and jams. The music of In The Skies casts a captivating, spellbinding mood. Often acclaimed as Peter Green's best solo album, In The Skies returns to CD remastered by Vic Anesini and presented with bonus tracks for the first time.

Lil Green - The Chronological Lil Green 1947-1951 (2005) [Classics Blues & Rhythm Series]

This is the third and final volume in the complete recordings of Lil Green in chronological order as reissued by the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series. By 1947 Lil Green was beginning to sound more than a little like Ida Cox, even when handling songs from Tin Pan Alley rather than straight up out of the tried and true traditional blues repertoire. Comparisons could also be drawn between Lil Green and Nellie Lutcher or Julia Lee. While her "crossover" performances are worthwhile, there's nothing quite like hearing this woman savor the flavor of Bessie Smith hits like "Aggravatin' Papa," "Outside of That," and "You've Been a Good Old Wagon (But You Done Broke Down)." Green's own "Lonely Woman" has a powerful undercurrent running through it – there is even a remote possibility that Ornette Coleman was inspired by this record when conceiving his own composition of the same title in 1959. Even if the link is purely coincidental, these melodies have something wonderful in common. Green's final recordings for the Victor label are strengthened by the presence of tenor saxophonists Budd Johnson, Lem Johnson, and David Young.

Grant Green - Green Street (1961) {2002 Rudy Van Gelder Remaster}

As a trio, this edition of guitarist Grant Green's many ensembles has to rank with the best he had ever fronted. Recorded on April Fool's Day of 1961, the band and music are no joke, as bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey understand in the most innate sense how to support Green, lay back when needed, or strut their own stuff when called upon. Still emerging as an individualist, Green takes further steps ahead, without a pianist, saxophonist, or – most importantly – an organist.

One of the strongest albums ever cut by trombonist Urbie Green – a player who had a heck of a lot of talent, but who unfortunately could sometimes end up in some schmaltzy settings. Fortunately, this isn't one of them – as the group includes players like Jimmy Lyon on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Ike Horowitz on tenor – actually a nom-du-date for Al Cohn! The arrangements are tight, but never too much so – and there's a good degree of spirit in both the playing, and the compositions – some of which are by arranger Marion Evans. Titles include "Sneaky Pete", "Sassafras", "Melody In Bb", "How About You", and "Mutation".

Anyone casually searching for guitarist Grant Green's first recordings might easily wind up standing at a discographical crossroads, as three different albums claim to contain his earliest work. Technically speaking, Gambit's 2007 reissue of Grant Green's First Recordings is the definitive article; even if tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest was the leader on these sessions, what you hear are the guitarist's first performances in a recording studio. Recorded in New York City on December 10 and 12, 1959, this music represents Forrest's transition from a decade-long adventure as an R&B star to a jazzier, more stretched-out phase of his existence. Seven of these tracks were issued by Delmark records as Jimmy Forrest's album All the Gin Is Gone…

Recorded on April Fool's Day of 1961, the band and music are no joke, as bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey understand in the most innate sense how to support Green, lay back when needed, or strut their own stuff when called upon. Still emerging as an individualist, Green takes further steps ahead, without a pianist, saxophonist, or - most importantly - an organist. His willpower drives this music forward in a refined approach that definitely marks him as a distinctive, immediately recognizable player. It is also a session done in a period when Green was reeling in popular demand, as this remarkably is one of six recordings he cut for Blue Note as a leader in 1961, not to mention other projects as a sideman…
