When vibist Dave Pike recorded the 1962 LPs paired on this disc, U.S. jazz was being revitalized by the new wave of Brazil’s bossa nova, while on the pop side, dance fever raged on. Kicked off in 1960-61 by Chubby Checker’s global mega-smash, “The Twist,” there followed a series of dance hits including Checker’s “Limbo Rock,” which is covered herein. At the time of these two lively, tuneful albums, Pike (b. 1938) was employed by the popular jazz flutist Herbie Mann, whose repertoire successfully drew on both Latin music (like bossa nova) and some dance hits.

One of the more forward-looking Swedish composers and conductors of his age, Eggert died before achieving wider European recognition and has remained neglected ever since. The Second Symphony evokes moods both stormy and lyrical, revealing a technical brilliance that foreshadows Schubert. The Fourth Symphony reflects the military backdrop to the political unrest of the times, its alternative slow movement being one of Eggert’s most powerful and progressive works.

Haydn’s creative imagination was stimulated by eminent Italian composers such as Porpora and Scarlatti and by his contemporary C.P.E. Bach, whose piano sonatas Haydn had performed. Through Georg Wagenseil, an important figure in Viennese music for the piano, he also absorbed a new sense of musical form. Together, these influences generated Haydn’s own individual language, as shown in the Sonata in C major with its elegance and wit. The Andante con variazioni in F minor shows further refinement and development in the composer’s command of variation form. Alexandra Ivanova performs on fortepianos from Haydn’s era.
