The most easily available of tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves' infrequent sessions as a leader, this CD is a straight reissue of his original Jazzland LP. Three songs (including two ballads) showcase Gonsalves in a quartet with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb, while five other pieces add cornetist Nat Adderley (in his prime during the era) to the band. The music is straight-ahead and shows that Gonsalves was quite capable of playing with younger "modernists."

Not the sprawling session you'd usually get from a record with "all stars" in the title, and instead a tight small group record that features Coleman Hawkins at his later best! The setting is an outwardly trad one – recorded for the Swingville label with Joe Thomas on trumpet and Vic Dickenson on trombone – but there's a decidedly modern feel to the way that Hawk opens up the tunes – that undercurrent of darkness in his best later work, accented nicely by a hip rhythm trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums.

Tough 'Duff is the second album by organist Jack McDuff recorded in 1960 and released on the Prestige label. Jack McDuff switched from bass to organ in the 1950s and left near-poverty in Chicago for fame and celebrity in New York. Featured first with Willis Jackson and then with his own band, McDuff built a huge following almost immediately. Tough ‘Duff, his second LP as a leader, was the first of two meetings with Jimmy Forrest. Their organ/tenor interplay is remarkable throughout; Forrest is at the top of his game. The program is solid mainstream fare which leads to a minimum of confusion and maximum of swing.

During the early years of the bop revolution, few of its younger pianists recorded unaccompanied solos. Even by 1961, solo albums by the bop musicians were considered a bit unusual, but Elmo Hope (an underrated composer and pianist) fares quite well during this Riverside set, which has been reissued on CD. Hope is joined by his wife Bertha on second piano during three of the eight numbers, most notably on a swinging "Blues Left and Right." Of the solo pieces, Elmo Hope is at his best on "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and a cocktailish, but appealing, version of "Liza."

Bebop sessions were comparatively rare in 1967, but pianist Barry Harris and his sextet on this CD reissue perform with the sincerity and enthusiasm that was more closely associated with this music in 1957. The trumpetless group (which also consists of baritonist Pepper Adams, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, trombonist Slide Hampton, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Lenny McBrowne) performs four of Harris' joyful originals (most of which are based on common chord changes), the ballad "My Ideal" and two Bud Powell tunes, "Dance of the Infidels" and "Webb City." Everyone is in fine form, particularly Harris and Adams, and the pianist's arrangements perfectly fit (and uplift) the music. Highly recommended to bebop collectors.

Thelonius Monk was one of the truly great piano geniuses on the international jazz scene.Esbjörn Svensson is one of the truly great piano talents on the Scandinavian jazz scene. In some way you knew that they had to meet sooner or later. At last spiritually. And musically. "Plays Monk" is the telling title of the CD from 1996 by Esbjörn Svensson Trio (EST), now released on ACT. Ten of the most beloved songs by Monk, from nocturnal, lovingly caressing "`Round Midnight" to the gay and sprightly "Rhythm-A-Ning", gets here a becomingly shining new colour.

An album much in need of an explanation, Prince Flo & Jah Edward I began life as a reggae-lite concept, inspired by the duo's discovery of reggae via the rise of Bob Marley. Like many Americans of the day, the pair was pretty clueless, but unlike most, they had connections. Thus, a record deal was inked with a small Florida independent, and arrangements were made for the two to record at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston under the aegis of co-producer Errol Brown. Flo & Eddie duly turned up at the studio with a list of Jamaican songs and their own numbers ripe for reggae-fying. Brown tossed it in the trash, and gave the pair a crash course in "real" Jamaican music.

A retitled compilation of two of Jack McDuff's live albums from the '60s, Brother Jack McDuff Live! is an outstanding album, one of the purest examples ever of quite possibly the finest Hammond B3 organ player in the world. These recordings were made with McDuff's classic lineup: Red Holloway on tenor sax and flute, Joe Dukes on drums, and a young George Benson (long before he became a star making formulaic soul-pop albums in the '70s) on guitar.

The album 'Motion' was originally released on LP with five tracks and later on CD with eight. All those tracks were taken from the session on 29 August, 1961 and feature the trio with Elvin Jones on drums. However previous to this date there had been two earlier sessions with a trio featuring Nick Stabulas on drums. In 1997 Verve issued all the sessions on a three CD set, now sadly OOP. Whilst it is clear why the session with Elvin Jones was the one marked for release, the other sessions with Nick Stabulas are also excellent and offer a fascinating alternative glimpse of a 'work in progress'.

Boogaloo / Latin / New York Salsa

Pete Rodriguez was part of a wave of Nuyoricans who came of age in the early '60s twilight of the mambo era. The boogaloo sound was just starting to bubble up in El Barrio (East Harlem) amongst this generation of Nuyorican bandleaders, and Rodriguez's group was on the very front line, alongside the Joe Cuba Sextet and Ricardo 'Richie' Ray. Pete had one of the great boogaloo bands of all time; he truly generated high-calibre energy on the dance floor.
