Jazz / Jazz Funk / Jazz Blues / Guitar

A bit funky, a bit bluesy – and one of the only 70s albums we've ever seen from guitarist John White – a player with a feel that's a bit more laidback and loose than some of his contemporaries on the Mainstream label! The style here is somewhere between work by David T Walker and Freddie Robinson – some of the rougher edges of the latter, but more of the focus of the former – set up nicely in some west coast backings that feature work from Merl Saunders on organ, Hadley Caliman on tenor, Sonny Red on alto, and Phil Wilson on drums. There's an edge to some of the best tracks here that you wouldn't expect – especially in comparison to other Mainstream Records sessions – and titles include "Granite and Concrete", "Help Us Out", "Right Off", "City", "Tried To Touch", and "Number 3."

Really wonderful work from pianist Bobby Scott – a perfect showcase not just for his young talents as a composer and arranger, but also for a host of key solo performers as well! This full album brings together two previous 10" LP sessions – both of them brilliant, and graced by some of the most modern talents Bethlehem Records had to offer – which makes for extremely fresh sounds from Scott's wonderful music – jazz that's at a level that's really hard to peg – neither west coast cool, nor east coast arranged – but a really special space of its own!

Jazz / Bop / West Coast Jazz / Vibes

A hip hootenanny from vibist Terry Gibbs – hardly the folksy set you might guess from the title, and instead a lively batch of small combo tunes that grooves better than most of Gibbs' work from the 60s! Most tracks are of traditional origin – folk tunes, if you will – but the jazz inflections of the group quickly takes them bast their roots, using the core melodies mostly as a framework for improvisation – featuring great vibes from Gibbs, plus tenor and flute from Al Epstein, guitar from Jimmy Raney, and piano from Alicir McLeod. Terry's vibes are nice and bold, and titles include "Michael", "Joshua", "John Henry", "Greensleeves", "Tom Dooley", and "Sam Hall".

Tribute album that focuses more on songs played by Parker, as opposed to focusing primarily on songs composed by Parker. Rein de Graaff - Pianist. Dutch self-taught pianist who's made himself one of Europe's best session players. De Graaff led a trio from 1959 to 1962, then joined The Jazzopters for a year. He then headed his own quartet until 1964, at the same time playing with Erwin Some and Gijs Hendriks. De Graaff formed a new group in 1964 that stayed together until the '80s.

Jazz / Stride / Piano

Reissue with the latest 2017 remastering. Comes with a description written in Japanese. Earl Hines had many years of music under his belt when he cut this session in the mid 60s – yet his sense of creative improvisation was more than sharp enough to warrant the promise of the title! The set features Hines alone at the keyboard, in a wonderfully well-recorded setting – working this amazing magic on his solo performances, which really transform the tunes into something new entirely – piano explorations that almost make you feel like you're finding Earl in the back room of some small club, after hours – working out all sorts of new ideas, without having to worry about commercial considerations at all.

Jazz / Jazz Funk / Soul Jazz / Organ Hammond B-3

Sweet organ lines, heavy drums, and a great little groove throughout – a tight batch of groovers from the mighty Charles Kynard! The keyboardist is in fine 70s form here – stepping away from the sparer sound of his albums for Prestige with a fuller style for Mainstream Records – in a groove that's almost part blacksploitation funk, thanks to some sharp backings from arranger Richard Fritz! The mighty Paul Humphrey is at the bottom of the set on nicely funky drums – and other players include Arthur Adams on guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass, and some great additional horns, which give the record a larger jazzy finish, but never get in the way of Kynard's lean, mean organ lines. There's a great version of "Rock Steady" on the album, one that has a great funky intro – plus the cuts "Shout", "Lime Twig", "Slop Jar", "Name The Missing Word", "Little Ghetto Boy", and "Hot Sauce".

Jazz / Soul Jazz / Post Bop / Jazz Funk / Piano / Rhodes

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Nothing mystifying here – as the album grabs us right from the get-go – with wonderful Fender Rhodes lines from leader Tom Grant, and plenty of soulful tenor from the great Joe Henderson! The album's an overlooked gem from Joe's late 70s years – and the the player is right at home next to Grant's keys – which are sometimes acoustic, and sometimes accompanied by a wordless, humming sort of vocal – which really gives the album some strongly soulful currents! The rest of the quartet features Rick Laird on bass and Ron Steen on drums – and the electric tunes are especially wonderful, and are almost an extension of the vibe of some of Joe's late Milestone albums. Titles include "Caribbean Firedance", "Gazelle", "No Me Esqueca", and "Peddie Has A Point".

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. This is a fun quartet playing a very nice combination of Bossa-Samba-Jazz. Their version (Chick de Ipanema) has a fantastic incidental combination of two of the most amazing Bossa songs of all times in the same song; Girl from Ipanema and Summer Samba in a smooth and subtle way that will blow you away. Their other renditions to Bossa classics are amazing. Check them out, you'll love them.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. One of the first Dutch bands - if not the first - to perform purely Brazilian music, but not with the bossa nova's until then, but with his own compositions that radiate power and are compelling. Founders Josee Koning (vocals) and Peter Schön (keyboards, compositions) devise as a trademark for this approach: two percussionists on stage, live and in the mix on the record.

Jazz / Cool / Mainstream Jazz / Stride / Saxophone

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. Ben Webster plays live in Harlem – not the uptown scene in New York, but the Dutch city that became a surprisingly strong showcase for American players overseas! The date's got that easygoing style of some of Webster's best late live performances – a laidback rhythm trio, and Ben himself blowing these raspy, blue-tinged notes that are full of feeling – even when in a familiar setting – that quality that can make even subtle handling of a standard pop out with such Webster-like charm! The group features Tete Montoliu on piano, Rob Langereis on bass, and Tony Inzalaco on drums – and titles include "Stardust", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Sunday", "For All We Know", and "Perdido".
