is an award-winning graphic novel and comic series by Christian Gossett set in a sci-fi/fantasy world described by Gossett as "Mythic [Soviet] Russia". As a graphic novel it remains one of the most celebrated of the decade, an epic mythology inspired by the art, folklore and military history of the former Soviet Union. The series is thus an allegory of the former USSR--a post-World War II Soviet Russia mixing technology and sorcery. The 'United Republics of the Red Star', often simply called the 'State' in the comic, are shown to be coterminous with the historical Soviet Union in a map at the beginning of the first issue. The main enemy of the first novels, Al'Istaan, is a stand-in for historical Afghanistan and occupies a similar area on the map. Volume 1 consists of ten comics in a limited series, published by Image Comics from June, 2000 to June 2002. There are actually nine issues with an added Issue #7.5, plus an annual issue. Within the comics world, the books are a hit, and have already amassed an international cult following. For the world of popular art, they represent a very important progression in the way that comic books can be drawn, coloured and produced using a combination of traditional drawing, CG artwork and digital compositing, resulting in a unique, cinematic visual style that many have since tried to emulate but have never equalled. Superior story and incredible artwork.

Ian Curtis' death prompted a flood of bootlegs and similar "tributes," likely motivated more by profit than anything else. Seeking to trump this problem — though arguably coming from much the same standpoint — Factory issued Still in 1981, a haphazard if still useful collection of odds, ends, and more. Considering that the band's many singles weren't properly compiled until much later on Substance, Still makes only partial sense — the studio cuts were mostly outtakes, while the live songs had their own problems. Of the studio takes, only two tracks had seen formal release beforehand — the mesmerizing post-punk meets R&B groove of "Glass" and the searing "Dead Souls," certainly both worthy of even more listens. Beyond that, things were more hit and miss, with strong instrumental performances given to slightly indifferent songs and vice versa.

Carted to Alabama under the cloud of dark politics, a band drew a glistening straight line from punk to country to soul to grand theater. On November 8th, the day after the 2016 election, Welsh-bred, Chicago-based musician and visual artist Jon Langford and a crew of merry-makers and alchemists filed into the NuttHouse studio, a one-story former bank building in Sheffield, Ala. (population 9,039). The musicians from Chicago, Nashville, Los Angeles, and just over the Tennessee River bridge made the pilgrimage to a place of legend and myth, where music runs as deep as the river’s current, to see what might come of it all.

The primary impetus behind this ambitious 12-disc box set is to gather all nine of the Grateful Dead's Warner Brothers titles. However, the staggeringly high quotient of previously unissued bonus material rivals – and at times exceeds – the content of those original albums. The Golden Road (1965-1973) truly has something – and usually a lot of it – for every degree of Deadhead…
