On Social Cues, Matt Shultz tries to make sense of a tumultuous time in his life. The Cage the Elephant frontman not only went through a divorce but also lost two of his best friends to suicide during the recording of the band's fifth full-length album. But rather than dwell on his tragic circumstances, Shultz focused on the positives that tend to get dismissed during periods of personal turmoil. “I think there’s the temptation, when you’re going through a tough time, to get stuck in the melodrama of things and be like, ‘Oh, I’m going to write a sad song and it’s just going to explain exactly where I’m at,'” Shultz said in an interview with Beats 1. “You miss out on other notes and colours of life that are so important.”

From Cage to Satie, from Satie to Cage, the musical ping-pong proposed by this CD is exciting. It was Cage that pointed to Satie as an innovative composer, who anticipated Marcel Duchamp, and in so doing indicated an ideal bond between Satie and himself. It's not rare, therefore, that concert programs or recordings unite the two, what is rare is the ease and frequency heard here, of the exchange between them. A play list of a high order, but there is more. The premise for this recording enters the heart of a conflict of ideas in Contemporary music. Cage, pro-Satie, was considered revolutionary. Pierre Boulez, who at first was in good relation with Cage, then in open conflict, considered Satie a banal neoclassicist and Cage himself, like Satie, nothing other than a dilettante, a clown that perpetually repeats himself and an eternal adolescent.

The original prepared piano and the only samples ever to be authorized by the estate of world-renown composer, John Cage. This particular collection of sounds was created for use in his magnum opus composition, Sonatas & Interludes (February 1946-March 1948). Using his original materials and following the precise instructions found at the head of his published score, various "mutes" were inserted between the strings of the keys, then each note pristinely recorded and programmed to bring you the instrument as Cage himself both envisioned and performed. Forty-five of the piano's eighty-eight keys were prepared, eleven with double preparations; three dynamic levels in five articulations comprise a total of 1,320 samples. This landmark achievement makes an authentic prepared piano, and by extension the works of John Cage, available to sampler owners in one of the most unique virtual instruments ever created.
