Jazz / Modern Jazz / Post Bop / Progressive Jazz / Piano Trio

The first sound on Italian pianist Enrico Zanisi’s deeply satisfying trio CD is the resonant, woody bass of Joe Rehmer. Unaccompanied and playing almost to himself, he lays down a short, four-bar phrase of loping quarter and half notes, a figure that bleeds over bar lines and establishes a smooth, easy feel to the tune. Zanisi, who can bring a subtle touch to his piano for one phrase and then sharp, steady accents the next, echoes the line with his left hand while drilling eighth-note chords to move the piece along. What once was drifting now has a groove, aided by Alessandro Paternesi’s funky kit work, and “Life Variations” takes off.

Although St. Louis was as important to the development of late 19th and early 20th century African American music as New Orleans, Memphis, Kansas City, and Chicago, recordings by early St. Louis jazz bands appear to have been marginalized and underappreciated as reissue compilations focus mainly upon the Crescent City, the Windy City, and the Big Apple. In 1997, the Timeless label released Jazz in St. Louis, a 23-track sampling of rare wax dating from the years 1924-1927.

Summer 1988 and as Acid House raged across the UK pockets of resistance began springing up delicated to a very different beat. Inspired by Hip-Hop, Jazz and a wealth of Soul and Funk recordings stretching back to the 60's America, young musicians breathed life into old sounds, recorded new ones and set about spreading their message worldwide. Soul Jazz Sessions celebrates those bands, producers, and DJ's who took the next step into the studio and produced some dancefloor magic in the process.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. An incredible collaboration from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson – and one that gives Milt one of his sharpest records ever! The setting is relatively straight – tenor from Coltrane, vibes from Jackson – plus rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Yet there's also a sense of openness here that you'd hardly ever expect on other records by Jackson – especially his contemporaneous sides with the Modern Jazz Quartet – and Coltrane's tenor gets as much room to roam here as it did on Prestige – really cutting some beautifully soulful, open, and flowing lines throughout!

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation.

Jazz / Bop / Hard Bop / Vibes / Strings

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. A sweet set of ballads from vibist Milt Jackson that we dig as much for the silky smooth orchestrations by Quincy Jones as Milt's agile and crisp approach to the vibes. The strings and horns buoy the group nicely, which also features Connie Kay and under recorded guitarist Barry Galbraith on a number of tunes. Ten mellow numbers: "The Cylinder", "Makin Whoopee", "Alone Together", "Tenderly", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Nuages", "Deep In A Dream", "I'm A Fool To Want You", "The Midnight Will Never Set" and "Tomorrow".
