With their debut recording on Delphian, Bojan Čičić and his Illyria Consort propelled the name of Carbonelli from obscurity into the classical charts, recapturing the excitement which the violinist-composer stirred up in eighteenth-century London.

In certain respects, Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli does not quite fit the eighteenth-century mould. For a neo-Corellian, he is unusually fond of complexity, both technical and compositional, and also unusually open to other contemporary influences, such as those of Handel and Vivaldi. But the quality of his music speaks for itself virtuosic and joyously melodic, these six chamber sonatas had a huge impact on Delphian producer Paul Baxter.

This is the first time a French violinist has joined the line of prestigious solo virtuosi recording for the Vivaldi Edition. Violinist Julien Chauvin and his Concert de la Loge – founded in 2015, and modelled on one of the most celebrated orchestras of the late 18th century – here reveal all the discreet charms of an inventive concertante style rich in detail, featuring Vivaldi’s favoured instrument. This particular set of concerti highlight the consistently close links between Vivaldi’s instrumental and operatic works.

Modest Mussrogsky hat seinen Klavierzyklus „Bilder einer Ausstellung“ – Erinnerungen an Viktor Hartmann 1874 veröffentlicht. Die einzelnen Sätze beschreiben Gemälde und Zeichnungen seines im Jahr zuvor gestorbenen Freundes Viktor Hartmann, die Mussorgski auf einer Gedächtnisausstellung gesehen hatte. Das Werk entstand auf Anregung eines gemeinsamen Freundes, des Kunstkritikers Wladimir Stassow. Er war auch an der Namensgebung der Stücke beteiligt und ihm wurde der Zyklus gewidmet.

The Archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna holds a manuscript with six anonymous early 18th-century pasticcio sonatas for chalumeau and basso continuo—the only known works in this genre for early clarinet. Their discovery is a dream come true for lovers of early clarinet instruments and we are very proud to present them as world premiere recording on this CD.
