With ornate imagery reminiscent of paintings from the story's 18th century period, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel depicts the rise and fall of a sensitive rogue in the British aristocracy. Young Irishman Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) leaves home to seek his fortune after apparently killing an English officer in a duel. Through a series of mishaps and accidents, Barry winds up fighting with the Prussian army in the Seven Years' War under the command of Capt. Potzdorf (Hardy Kruger); at war's end, Potzdorf enlists Barry to spy on a shady Chevalier (Patrick Magee). Instead, Barry joins up with the Irish Chevalier to flee Prussia and live as gamblers among Europe's elite. Wishing to climb even higher, Barry soon meets the beautiful Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson), marrying her for her fortune after her older titled husband dies.

Schauplatz ist ein osteuropäisches Ghetto im Jahr 1944. Jakob möchte seinen Leidensgefährten angesichts des Vormarsches der Roten Armee Hoffnung machen. Im Dienstraum der Gestapo hatte er entsprechende Meldungen aufgeschnappt. Jakob behauptet nun, heimlich ein Radio zu besitzen und erfindet ermutigende Nachrichten. Selbstmorde, zu denen Ghettobewohner immer wieder getrieben wurden, hören auf. Jeder wartet auf die Befreiung. Damit diese Hoffung bleibt, muss Jakob immer weiter lügen. Eines Tages entdeckt ein kleines Mädchen, dass Jakob gar kein Radio besitzt und alle Nachrichten erfunden waren. Das Ghetto befindet sich kurz vor der Deportation, doch die Menschen klammern sich weiter an Jakobs Lügen.

David Locke (Jack Nicholson) is a television journalist looking for rebels to interview in the African Sahara desert but he keeps failing and at last his Land Rover gets hopelessly stuck on a sand dune. After a long walk through the desert back to his hotel a thoroughly glum Locke finds that an Englishman by the name of Robertson (Charles Mulvehill), who has also been staying there and with whom he had struck up a friendship, is dead. Tired of his work, his marriage and his life, Locke switches identities with Robertson, carefully cutting and swapping the photographs in their passports. As Robertson, he reports his own death and since the hotel manager has already mistaken him for Robertson, the plan goes off without a hitch.

A few months after his notorious suicide attempt, Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa was regenerated by the notion of helming the first Russian/Japanese co-production. Co-scripted and directed by Kurosawa, Dersu Uzala is the story of an elderly guide and Goldi hunter (Maxim Munzuk), who, at the turn of the century, agrees to shepherd a Russian explorer (Yuri Solomin) and a troop of soldiers through the most treacherous passages of the Far East. The guide has been "one" with the land almost from birth, and is thus able to save his party from perishing. Four years in the making, Dersu Uzala won the 1976 Best Foreign Film Oscar and restored the flagging Akira Kurosawa to the top ranks of the Japanese film industry.

Las de la vanité parisienne, Martin, créateur de parfums, s'est exilé sur une île d'Amérique latine.
