After a series of popular and award-winning recordings running over a wide range of the piano repertoire, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is a well-known name in the piano lover’s world. But back in the 90’s, Bavouzet was just a name on a little known Japanese label specializing in piano music. The Études as presented here by Bavouzet are marvels of musical insight and control. The Children’s Corner is equally compelling. Also on this disc presented other Debussy’s works as Page d'album, Berceuse héroïque, La plus que lente, and Elégie. As with the Etudes, the recorded sound of the piano is miraculously good. The recording was made in 1996 but not released by the Japanese label, Octavia Records, until 2005. This perhaps explains its obscurity relative to Bavouzet’s more recent recordings of the same material.

Jean Françaix: a quintessentially French composer following in the tradition of Saint-Saëns, Poulenc and Satie; composer of some one-hundred-and-fifty works; and virtuoso pianist in his own right. The four works on this recording were composed between 1942 (the Divertissement—very much a 'distraction' during the Nazi Occupation of France) and 1977 (the Clarinet Quintet). All four share a high degree of compositional mastery, but this is always embedded within an air of grace, of profound charm, and of wit. It is perhaps this sense of humour which has so endeared Françaix's music to generations of musicians and music-lovers. But despite the facts that L'heure du berger was composed in honour of a Parisian restaurant who were to use it as 'background' music, that Françaix self-deprecatingly passed off A huit as a 'stop-gap to fill a programme' for the Vienna Octet, and that the Divertissement contains unashamedly blatant musical jokes, these compositions are unmistakably the work of an expert, a distinctively 'Gallic' artist.

Rameau on the piano? It's not altogether unheard of – there were a handful of classic recordings made by Robert Casadesus back in 1952 – but, despite many recordings of Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti on the piano in the digital age, there's been precious little Rameau on the piano until this Angela Hewitt recording of three complete suites from 2006. By choosing the Suite in E minor from the Pièces de clavecin of 1731 plus the Suites in G minor and A minor from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin, Hewitt has for the most part stayed away from the more evocatively titled works and stuck to the standard stylized Baroque dance forms of the allemande, courante, and gigue. Justly celebrated for her cool and clean Bach recordings, this strategy works well for Hewitt. Without seeming to resort to the sustain or the mute pedal, she floats Rameau's lines and melodies, and without seeming to exaggerate the accents or dynamics, she gives Rameau's rhythms a wonderful sense of lift. In the deliberately evocative movements from the G minor Suite – "La poule," "Les sauvages," and especially "L'egiptienne" – Hewitt seems to bring less to the music – her interpretations are remarkably straight – and to get less out of it – her performances are remarkably bland.

Thibaudet, Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic join to release the rarely recorded Khachaturian concerto. Jean-Yves is the modern-day champion of a work once-famous in the hands of virtuosi such as William Kapell and Oscar Levant. “Thibaudet mastered the score, deftly working the extremes of flashy dynamism and feathery ruminations” (Los Angeles Times). Coupled with short solo piano works including the immortal Adagio from ‘Spartacus’; the Sabre Dance; Lullaby; Masquerade Suite and selections from Pictures of Childhood.

Whether in literature, architecture, painting or music, many sources and works of art from Brittany are noticed, studied and admired around the world. In music, the Breton tradition is the junction of numerous always renewed influences: those of the different peoples who came to settle, religious or pagan festivals which punctuated the life of the populations, drawing certain sources from work in the fields or even to give heart to the work of the men who left on their ships but also inspired by landscapes, moors and the sea… Breton has always sang, played, danced, prayed and passed on this living heritage from generation to generation.
