From the pounding, primal assault of the opening track, "Tired of Sex," it's clear from the outset that Pinkerton is a different record than the sunny, heavy guitar pop of Weezer's eponymous debut. The first noticeable difference is the darker, messier sound – the guitars rage and squeal, the beats are brutal and visceral, the vocals are mixed to the front, filled with overlapping, off-the-cuff backing vocals.

Overseen by the Zappa Trust and produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister, Joe Travers, The Mothers 1970 collects together more than four hours of previously unreleased performances by the heralded line-up which lasted roughly seven months: Aynsley Dunbar (drums), George Duke (piano/keys/trombone), Ian Underwood (organ/keys/guitar), Jeff Simmons (bass/vocals) and Flo & Eddie aka Howard Kaylan (vocals) and Mark Volman (vocals/percussion) of The Turtles who performed under the aliases to skirt contractual limitations of performing under their own names. This iteration of The Mothers, which likely began rehearsals fifty years ago this month, came to an end in January of 1971 when Simmons quit the band during the making of the 200 Motels movie.

While not quite as strong as the band's debut, Scoundrel Days is still a-ha succeeding as a marketed "pretty boy" band which can connect musically and lyrically as much as any musical sacred cow. The opening two songs alone make for one of the best one-two opening punches around: the tense edge of the title track, featuring one of Morten Harket's soaring vocals during the chorus and a crisp, pristine punch in the music, and "The Swing of Things," a moody, elegant number with a beautiful synth/guitar arrangement (plus some fine drumming courtesy of studio pro Michael Sturgis) and utterly lovelorn lyrical sentiments that balance on the edge of being overheated without quite going over. Although the rest of the disc never quite hits as high as the opening, it comes close more often than not…

Released in 1970, this was one of the first of what would become several live performance albums. It was a hit, which considering how Elvis' management operated would ensure more such releases in the future. The album peaked at 13 on the US Billboard album chart and would eventually be certified PLATINUM by the RIAA. It was an even bigger hit in the UK reaching number 2 on the album chart there. This is a solid performance and includes a few songs that he rarely performed such as Sweet Caroline, Runaway, and Yesterday. It also includes the hit song The Wonder Of You, which was a top ten hit in the US and went all the way to number 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart and in the UK.

Fleetwood Mac was at the top of its game in August 1977 when the band returned to its adopted home in Southern California to play three shows at The Forum in Los Angeles. 'Rumours' had only been out a few weeks when the band left in February to tour the world, returning six months later to play three shows at The Forum for nearly 50,000 fans. 'Rumours' achieved number 1 in the UK and went well on its way to becoming one of the most successful albums ever released, which has been certified 14x Platinum in the UK. 'Rumours Live' captures the energy and excitement of the band's opening night at The Forum on August 29, 1977. The nearly 90-minute performance includes live versions of most of the songs from 'Rumours' and 'Fleetwood Mac', the group's first multi-platinum #1 album, which came out in 1975. The concert remained unreleased for decades until 2021, when 'Gold Dust Woman' from the show was included as a bonus track on 'Live: Deluxe Edition', Rhino's expanded version of Fleetwood Mac's 1980 concert album. The other 17 songs on the collection have never been released before.
