Charles Tolliver Music Inc. Live At Slugs Vol. 1&2

Turns On is a collection of early Soft Machine recordings sold in two separate volumes. Turns On, Vol. 1 catches the newly formed group in their first studio recordings and live performances in early to mid-1967, all pre-dating the first LP. The lineup on most of the 16 tracks consists of Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Kevin Ayers. Daevid Allen appears on four studio recordings. The repertoire draws a lot from the Wilde Flowers' songbook, Ayers, Hugh Hopper and Brian Hopper having written most of the material (Wyatt and Ratledge were only beginning to submit material). Sound quality goes from poor to very weak, but it is still better than on Turns On, Vol. 2 - while the latter focuses on live material, this one contains more studio demo cuts…

A lost treasure from pianist Horace Tapscott - material recorded live at the legendary Lighthouse club in 1979, done with a very hip group of players from the Nimbus Records scene! The tracks are quite long throughout - and often start with Tapscott musing into the groove with solo piano, soon joined by group members who include Reggie Bullen on trumpet, Gary Bias on alto sax, Roberto Miranda and David Bryant on bass, and George Goldsmith on drums. Tapscott's piano has plenty of sharp edges throughout, but these introductory moments also show his more contemplative side as well - making the long tracks a wonderfully rich portrait of his musical talents.

Some of the marks of excellence on a Billy Flynn CD are as predictable as they are gratifying. Lenny Ibizarre is a Danish producer and musician from Copenhagen. He broke into Ibiza's music scene in 1997 with his debut album The Ambient Collection: "An amalgamation of slow-burning funked-up retro-grooves clad in subliminal soundscapes of tender melancholy and inner peace", as the press put it at the time. The album received great reviews from both the critics and chill-out DJs such as Jose Padilla from Cafe Del Mar with whom Lenny remixed and co-produced for a period of time. Within a year Lenny was remixing artists such as the Doors, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley. His Remix of Riders on the Storm made its mark and Lenny was called to produce his first movie soundtracks.
