Home and the people who make it have captivated Lori McKenna for years. Over the last three decades, as she became a wife and mother of five, she has also emerged as one of the most respected, prolific singer-songwriters in popular music. Her 2016 release The Bird and the Rifle netted three Grammy nominations, along with Americana Music Association nods - all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then, she made history: In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s Girl Crush and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 Humble and Kind solo. Both songs also clinched back-to-back Grammy wins for Best Country Song. In 2017, she became the Academy of Country Music’s first female Songwriter of the Year. The Tree [2018], her eleventh studio album, was nominated for the 2019 Americana Awards Album of the Year. 2020 brings a new record for McKenna, The Balladeer, produced by Dave Cobb.

Lori McKenna titled her album 1988 after the year she married her husband, Gene, yet the 10 songs within also serve as a love letter to lifelong friendships, people she's lost, and her family. Recorded with producer Dave Cobb in Savannah, Georgia, 1988 naturally has its nostalgic moments, even if not every ending is a happy one. With more of an electric edge than her past projects, 1988 feels in step with classic '90s albums by Sheryl Crow or Gin Blossoms, where the lyrics pulled you in as much as the melody or production. Playing together on acoustic guitars while facing one another in the studio, McKenna and Cobb tracked the album live, giving it a feeling of immediacy and authenticity.

Do you have a favorite song? A song you fall into whenever you are feeling deeply? A song that catches you off guard (or even in the shower) and carries you away? Do you have that kind of song? Wouldn’t it be nice to have an entire album of them? Well, for Candian chanteuse Lori Cullen (and probably many others), this is that album. Captured in the studio with the talented support team of pianist Ron Davis, bassists Drew Birston and drummer Mark Mariash, Cullen has recaptured songs that have been both done to death and not done enough in her own innocent, open-eyed style.

Coping with loss is never easy. Some are completely defeated by the death of a loved one, choosing to retreat into isolation. Others prefer to reflect, celebrate the life that was lived, and play on. Saxophonist Charles Davis is part of the latter group. Davis lost his wife—Lori Samet-Davis—in April of 2012, but he didn't let that loss break his will to create. This album, a straight ahead display of artistic expression and affection, is given up in tribute to her.
