After the war he was one of the first musicians who played in Paris and, after 1947, in USA. Among the countless outstanding events of his career may be mentioned the first performance of Prokofiev’s «VII Sonata», that of Strawinsky’s «Capriccio» under the direction of the composer, «tournées» in Europe, USA, Japan and Israel.

Nikita Magaloff was one of the more interesting and charismatic keyboard figures of the twentieth century. Many of his recordings are still available and in modern sound; yet here was a man who was a friend of Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, from whom he took composition lessons, and Ravel, who was an enthusiastic admirer. Magaloff concertized with the most important conductors and orchestras of the day and at the most prestigious festivals. He also collaborated with the leading string players, like violinist Joseph Szigeti.

His passion for Chopin betrays something of the scholars dedication refusing to use the old Fontana editions of the Waltzes and preferring instead his own reading of the original manuscripts but Chopin is the least amenable of all composers to the relentless rigour of typewriter accuracy. While countless others are forgotten, Cortot (and his wrong notes) are remembered. So is Magaloff, and his unsparing, clear-eyed vision, continually sharpened and refreshed by many complete Chopin recital series in the musical capitals of the world: this is intrinsically live Chopin, ever alert to his melancholy undertow and yet never indulging the Romantic excesses of yore.

The second year of the Année de pèlerinagededicated to Italy, is judged overall to be the most important of the three. The whole series of the second year was published in 1858 and was preceded by two compilations which date from 1837 and 1849 respectively. On this recording the three Petrarca Sonnets are presented. The appearance of these Sonnets in Liszt's works dated back to around 1838 as lieder for voice and piano, which were later excellently transcribed for piano solo.

Hans Richter-Haaser (1912–1980) hailed from Braunschweig. He held a piano lectureship at the Braunschweig Academy before moving to Detmold. From there he pursued a busy concert career in Germany and abroad, especially in the USA. His specialist field was classical and early Romantic repertoire. Nikita Magaloff (1912–1992) was born in St. Petersburg. After the October Revolution his family first moved to Finland and later to Paris. From 1949 Magaloff lived in Switzerland, where he taught at the Geneva Academy. He was not only a renowned Chopin interpreter, but also a keen chamber musician. The focus of Chopin’s concertos is always on the virtuosity of the soloist, whereas the orchestra’s function is to provide the accompaniment. Latterly, conductors tried to make the orchestration sound much more complex and colourful. This Hans Rosbaud recording, however, finds him scrupulously following the score's original intentions, with single-instrument tonal colours especially shown to their best advantage.
