Chris Reynolds Dixie Seven Dixie Is Back in Town (1978 2020)

Brooklyn, NYC is home to one of the classic bands from the late ’60s. The band known as Mandrill was/is a Funk/Salsa/Blues/Rock band that gave Rock over ten albums to their name. These days, Carlos and Ric Wilson remain in the musically explosive lineup (brother Lou Wilson passed in 2013). With energy remaining, the Wilson Brothers return with a new Mandrill album.

To celebrate 50 years of Thin Lizzy Universal Music are releasing Rock Legends, a 6CD+DVD box set that features an astonishing 74 unreleased tracks. This box covers the band’s whole career with audio newly mastered by Andy Pearce. The content encompasses a raft of unreleased material including demos, radio sessions, live recordings and rare single edits. The track listing has been compiled by Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham and Lizzy expert Nick Sharp from a collection of newly discovered tapes most of which have never been heard before.

While not as ferocious as 1968's Elvis TV special or In Person at the International Hotel Las Vegas from 1969, this expanded 30th anniversary edition of the soundtrack to That's the Way It Is retains the excitement and exhaustion of his stage show of the time. The set is broken up into three separate discs. Disc one, special edition, includes the original 12-track album with seven bonus tracks taken from the same Las Vegas concerts and Nashville sessions. Disc two, the concert, includes the entire performance from the midnight show at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 12, 1970, consisting of mainly unreleased tracks highlighted by a rushed version of "Suspicious Minds," which finds the horn section falling behind an exhausted Elvis as he pushes the tempo. Disc three, the rehearsal, contains bits and pieces from these sessions..

Co-founding singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood both spent much of the time prior doing battle with deep pools of writer’s block. “How do you put these day to day things we’re all living through into the form of a song that we (much less anybody else) would ever want to listen to?” says Hood. “How do you write about the daily absurdities when you can’t even wrap your head around them in the first place? I think our response was to focus at the core emotional level. More heart and less cerebral perhaps.”
