Cello and piano duo Robin Michael and Daniel Tong return to Resonus with this dazzling collection of the complete works for cello and piano of Ludwig van Beethoven. Written across his productive life, they contain much that is considered pioneering and innovative within the genre.

Gabriel Fauré, a key player in the revival of the French school at the end of the 19th century, is distinguished by a rich catalog. Gabriel Fauré's Sonatas for Cello and Piano are masterpieces of chamber music, reflecting a profound and innovative exploration of the expressive capabilities of the cello in duets with the piano. They are distinguished by their harmonic richness and innovative texture, testifying to Fauré's stylistic evolution towards a more complex and nuanced musical language.

It is difficult to separate the three integrals of Beethoven's cello and piano works recorded by Pierre Fournier, with three prestigious Beethoven partners: Arthur Schnabel (1947-48), Friedrich Gulda (1959) and Wilhelm Kempff (1965).

The musicians were brought together by education – they both studied in Kraków and Paris. The band assumed the name Cracow Duo over ten years ago.

Joseph Mayseder took part in a performance of Joseph Haydn's oratorio "The Seven Last Words" in 1803 when he was only 14 years old. In later years, he played in numerous Viennese orchestras, including under the direction of Beethoven and Schubert, and was concertmaster of the Vienna Court Orchestra from 1830. He composed numerous violin works and chamber music at a young age, primarily for his own performance. Mayseder's compositions were performed in thousands of concerts worldwide in the 19th century, including by artists such as Henri Vieuxtemps, Joseph Hellmesberger, Franz Liszt and Giovanni Bottesini; however, they are still considered an forgotten gems today.

In this new chamber recording, Steven Isserlis together with his regular collaborator, fortepianist Robert Levin, presents a magisterial and long-awaited compendium of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, including Beethoven’s arrangement of his Op 17 Horn Sonata. The use of the fortepiano opens up a wealth of sonic possibilities for these works.

On Friday, June 4, Yo-Yo Ma and long-time friend and musical partner Emanuel Ax will release Hope Amid Tears, a new recording of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, on Sony Classical. Available now for preorder, Hope Amid Tears presents Beethoven’s five sonatas for cello and piano in the order in which they were composed, tracing an important arc in Beethoven’s development and approach as a composer. Joining them are Beethoven’s three sets of variations for cello and piano.
