According to Ken Peplowski, the quartet on 'Enrapture' is the best group he's ever worked with. 'It's a joy to be able to go in any direction you want to go in musically, and know that everyone will just fall in with you. Almost every song was made in one take. We really felt that we captured the spontaneity of a 'live' performance on what were some challenging pieces of music. This is the culmination of sifting through a year's worth of material that best highlights this band. We played as many live performances as we could leading up to the recording date. I care deeply about these songs and hope I've successfully conveyed that to the listeners.'

Almost everything you hear on this recording is a first take, including Diego's original, Por Paco(as in Paco DeLucia), where you're hearing literally what I'm hearing and reacting to in the moment. We hope you like our little journey and we look forward to embarking on the next.

Peplowski's outstanding solos and his ability to get the most out of this very well rehearsed large ensemble assure that the essence of these time tested charts comes through.

Many contemporary big bands are all about "breaking new ground" and "exploring new pathways." Not this one. Ace clarinetist Ken Peplowski, who has performed and recorded with myriad large ensembles, at home and abroad, but has seldom led one—although he did record one other big-band album, Last Swing of the Century (Concord Jazz, 1999)—simply wants to make beautiful music, a goal he and his hand-picked corps of merry men (and one woman) easily reach on Sunrise, as they glide smoothly through a dozen numbers gleaned from the Great American Songbook and elsewhere.

The clarinet of Ken Peplowski, taken up in honor of Goodman, is brilliant on this hard-swinging set of performances by his orchestra and serves as an excellent example of what can be done and has been done to the keep the music of the Big Band Era fresh and vital. Last Swing Of The Century - Big Band Music of Benny Goodman captures the brilliant essence of Benny Goodman and is ever so essential.

Ken Peplowski is reunited with his NYC working group that includes Ted Rosenthal on piano, Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Peplowski takes us through a series of 'heartbreakers' from Lennon/McCartney's For No One to Irving Berlin's All Alone. He also includes a piano and clarinet duo of Poulenc's Romanza and a jazz rendition of Beach Boy Brian Wilson's Caroline, No. In total, there are 11 lesser heard tunes all recorded 'live' to 2-track in the studio. The entire album was made in about 3 hours with the great Malcolm Addey at the mixing console.

The third CD encounter between reed specialists Ken Peplowski and Alan Barnes provides a great variety of top-class swinging jazz numbers with an excellent rhythm section. No surprises there then. The surprises and delights come in the choice of material, which is varied and fresh. The opening Tippin’ (Horace Silver) gives a clear indication of what is to come, with Barnes’ baritone leading out, followed by a Dave Green double bass solo and Peplowski’s fluid clarinet rounding things up. Barnes does the rounds of his reed instrument collection, appearing on clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor and alto saxophones across the album, while Peplowski limits himself to clarinet and tenor sax (perhaps due to airline baggage restrictions?)…

Ken Peplowski shows his diversity on this blending of two sessions, the first 8 tunes reuniting him with pianist Shelly Berg with rhythm support of Tom Kennedy and Jeff Hamilton and the remaining 3 tunes pairing off with bassist Greg Cohen, drummer Joe Ascione and vibist Chuck Redd. Peplowski's clarinet playing is unrivaled with the purist tone and most urbane facility around today. His tenor sound, while reminiscent of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster is easily distinguishable as his and his alone.

“Johnny Varro has been such a consistent pianist ever since his career began in earnest when he joined Bobby Hackett’s band in 1953 that it is easy to take him for granted. As with one of his influences, Teddy Wilson, Varro gives one the impression that he never played a wrong note, a tasteless phrase or a hesitant chorus. Johnny Varro is very happy with the music that resulted from this project and listeners will have no problem enjoying each of the 15 performances, whether it is solo, duet, trio or quartet. Johnny Varro, as usual, excels in every format.” – Scott Yanow, May 2008
