David Geringas heard about the existence of the New Goldberg Variations in 1997, shortly after the first performance, and integrated into his project ‘Bach Plus’ excerpts from John Corigliano’s Fancy on a Bach Air as an introduction to Bach’s Cello Suite Nr. 1. In 2014, while planning a CD with works by American composers, he remembered about the New Goldberg Variations, and in 2015 he performed the piece, which is exactly the length a one half of a recital, in Parma, Italy, together with the pianist Ian Fountain, who is also the pianist on this recording. One year later, while being interviewed for his 70th birthday, he concretized the idea for this CD.

"Artist portrait" is a beautifully arranged bouquet of Sharon Isbin’s “best”. In this album, she has combined in a single CD Baroque, Latin music, Folks songs, and modern concerti commissioned by the artist. Mrs. Isbin has created the guitar department at Julliard School of Music, she has commissioned more concerti then any other guitarist, has won a Grammy, has written the Classical Guitar Answer Book to mention just a few of her outstanding accomplishments.

Nonesuch Records releases an album from longtime friends and collaborators Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) and Nico Muhly, Peter Pears: Balinese Ceremonial Music. Peter Pears comprises nine songs written by the duo plus three gamelan transcriptions by ethnomusicologist Colin McPhee that inspired the songs. Bartlett and Muhly perform the Peter Pears music on May 24 at New York City’s (Le) Poisson Rouge (LPR) as part of its tenth anniversary festival, June 6 at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, and June 8 at LSO St Luke’s in London presented by the Barbican.

Christian Lindberg is perhaps the first classical trombonist to maintain a successful full-time performing career as a soloist. Though now considered among the instrument's foremost exponents, he actually took up the trombone fairly late, only starting playing at age 17 after hearing recordings by the great jazz trombonist Jack Teagarden. By 19, Lindberg was the principle trombonist of the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm. But he left that position after just a year, saying he was bored playing in an orchestra.

Three transformative works by three Hungarian composers—Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4, Sz. 91; Ligeti’s String Quartet No. 1; and Kurtag’s 12 Microludes for string quartet, Op. 13—conspire to create a program steeped in the incessant sonics of the 20th century.

The vihuela is not a viol, it is a sort of lute. Vihuela and lute coexisted in Spain but the composers wrote only for the former. The works played in this recording were mainly published between 1535 and 1554; Daza's book (1576) and a collection of other authors (1593) mark the end of the era of the vihuela. Then the instrument lent its shape to the guitar, as you can infer from the cover of the CD.
