A characteristically humongous (8-CD) box set from the wonderful obsessive-compulsives at Bear Family, documenting the Killer's '60s tenure at Smash Records. Lewis made consistently good music during this period, but the combination of his personal scandals and the British Invasion made him a pariah to radio programmers until mid-decade, when he returned to his country roots. Highlights of the set include the entirety of a Texas live show, with Lewis and his crack band rendering various early rock standards at dangerously high (i.e., proto punk) speed, some excellent duets with his (then) wife Linda Gail, and gorgeous renditions of standards like Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and Merle Haggard's "Lonesome Fugitive." Lewis fans with deep pockets should grab this one immediately…

John Lee Hooker is one of the true giants of blues, ranking alongside the likes of other post-war greats such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf as one of the artists who contributed massively to the development of the genre. His driving boogie style has become an essential element of the way blues is played in the modern era. He took the simple structures of Delta blues, sometimes using one and two-chord compositions, but added a fierce, relentless and hypnotically rhythmic approach, underlining the rawness of the messages in his songs. He was one of the blues artists who exerted a substantial influence on emerging stars in the rock ‘n’ roll era, from Bob Dylan through to Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, and his legacy resonates through the rock music of the last half-century. He recorded prolifically under a number of names, but this great value 101-track 4-CD collection focuses on the singles he released under his own name (or in the case of some Chess singles, as John Lee Booker) on the Modern, Chess and VeeJay labels from 1949 through to 1962. It naturally includes his big R&B hits during that period - “Boogie Chillen”, “Crawlin’ King Snake”, “Hobo Blues”, “Hoogie Boogie”, “I’m In The Mood”, “Boom Boom” and “Dimples”, some of which have become blues and R&B standards. Includes comprehensive booklet with full discographical and session information. It’s a thorough overview of his output during what was perhaps the key era of his career, and a fine showcase for his unique talent.

This 5-CD, 149-song box set brings together The Killer’s seminal recordings for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records label including “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “High School Confidential,” and much more.
Back in 1957, when Jerry Lee Lewis exploded on radio and jukeboxes with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” rock’n’roll was brand new, young and wild, loud and dangerous. The same could be said of Jerry Lee. Jerry Lee was in Louisiana when he heard Elvis and Carl Perkins and knew he had to get to Memphis and Sam Phillips, a man he thought would understand his music. He was right. When Sam heard that wild, free spirit with a no holds barred piano pounding style, he put a microphone in front of him and …turned on the recording machine.
