Tate McRae's third album opens with a warning: "Nah, seriously, get your hands off my man." Right away, you know that Tatiana is in control. Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce, Gaga had Jo Calderone, Nicki Minaj has countless onstage alter egos; McRae, who has described herself as a "pretty reserved Canadian," slips into this "feisty" and "obnoxious" (her words) character to leverage dance-floor sex appeal. And Tatiana comes with an A-list army: producer Ryan Tedder, guest stars including McRae's boyfriend Kid Laroi ("I Know Love"), and hit-making songwriters like Julia Michaels and Amy Allen (who have credits on Sabrina Carpenter's biggest hits as well as that aforementioned opener, the slinky slow roll "Miss possessive"). Their aim is true on So Close to What, but sometimes McRae's own firepower is a little lackluster.

Grady Tate has been one of the world's most versatile, frequently-recorded musicians for more than 40 years. He is often featured as a distinctive drummer, but in fact, he is also one of the best vocalists in the world. For this album, Grady Tate selects everything from standards to '50s musical hits number to his own composition, but the common theme is "love". That is the very message Tate, who celebrated his 70th birthday during the recording date, wanted to remind people of. Grady's voice swings gently and sometimes longingly together with the finest trio.

For this CD reissue, which brings back material originally recorded by Stanley Dance for the Felsted label, veteran swing tenor Buddy Tate is heard at the head of two different groups for three obscure songs apiece. The first half has Tate leading his Celebrity Club Orchestra, a four-horn octet that lacked any big names but worked regularly throughout the era. For the second half, Tate is teamed with some of the Count Basie alumni including trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Dicky Wells, altoist Earle Warren and drummer Jo Jones. The music overall is fine mainstream jazz of the 1950's that is easily recommended to straightahead jazz fans although little unexpected or all that memorable occurs.

Mainstream-swing-to-bop's the thing on the two 1960 Swingville gems paired here, both of which feature one of the foremost Basieites on tenor saxophone, George "Buddy" Tate. Tate (1913-2001), whose big-toned blues mastery is his longtime calling card, is an integral part of a lively quintet date led by Claude Hopkins (1903-1984), the first of three fine albums the pianist-composer-bandleader would pilot for Swingville.

According to the website All About Jazz, Tate was playing in public as early as 1925 in a band called McCloud's Night Owls." Tate's 2001 New York Times obituary stated that "he began his career in the late 1920s, playing around the Southwest with bands led by Terrence Holder, Andy Kirk and Nat Towles."
