Claire Spencer (Michelle Pfeiffer) enters a new phase of her life after a serious car accident leaves gaps in her memory. She is married to the renowned scientist Dr. Norman Spencer (Harrison Ford). Shortly after arriving in a new lakeside house in Vermont that once belonged to Norman's scientist father, her daughter Caitlin leaves home to go away to college. One day when Claire is working in the garden she hears loud sobbing coming from over the fence. It turns out to be her neighbor, Mary Feur (Miranda Otto). She seems terrified and Claire is very concerned, thinking that her husband is beating her. Norman tells her not to worry. Claire wakes in the middle of the night, and looks out of the window. She sees Mary's husband Warren (James Remar) dragging what looks like a body bag out into the boot of his car. By the time Claire had woken Norman, there was nothing left to see.

Claire va prendre conscience de son insatisfaction et Bruno de la nécessité d'être plus vigilant à l'avenir. Mais n'est-il pas déjà trop tard ?

Director Radley Metzger was taken quite seriously by critics in the late 1960s and early '70s, despite quite explicit sexuality in his films. Eventually turning to hardcore film under the pseudonym Henry Paris (including such still well-regarded films as The Opening of Misty Beethoven), Metzger delves here into fetishism in a violent and intriguing triangle.

A beautiful thriller that has more elements of mystery and romance than of the thriller that revolves around an auctioneer who has an insane collection of paintings of women. Tornatore manages to portray this lonely man in a perfect manner, even a bit too exaggerated towards the extent of that loneliness as well as the overall plot is a little bit confusing in terms of how the plan is carried out at the end, and how everything gets screwed over so suddenly and so painfully. Still, this film has gorgeous work of art and a spectacular art direction, it has Geoffrey Rush giving a nice performance: strong and emotional, and it keeps your interest, even if it's 2 hours long, and that is something to applaud.

As her lack of emotional stability begins to take a toll on Justine's brand new marriage as well as the party – and old wounds are exposed – Claire's wealthy husband John (Kiefer Sutherland) knows a great deal about a planet that is on a possible collision course with Earth. The second half of the movie focuses on Claire, who ends up taking her sister in after the marriage collapses, and also begins to fear that John is hiding apocalyptically bad news. John Hurt and Charlotte Rampling co-star. Melancholia screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
