In life and work, Claudio Bunster (formerly Teitelboim) prefers extreme challenges. Bunster, a physicist who contemplates brain-warping theories of space and time, returned to his native Chile from the United States precisely when most intellectuals would have stayed clear— during the middle of the Pinochet dictatorship (K. Mossman, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)

The Berliner Philharmoniker elect their own conductor: after von Karajan’s death they chose Claudio Abbado. He rejuvenated the orchestra, expanded its repertoire, and created a less autocratic atmosphere, inspiring levels of commitment and communication from his musicians that resulted in performances and recordings that stand the test of time. Abbado’s tenure with the Berliner Philharmonic can be considered as one of the highlights in the orchestra’s history and many of their recording together still remain unsurpassed on record. DG celebrates this partnership with a 60-CD limited edition collection of their complete recordings – many classics right from the start.

For collectors of Claudio Abbado's recordings, the performances on this three-discs Japanese Esoteric label's remastered release of the Italian conductor's digital recordings of Brahms' symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker may seem redundant, since the symphonies were previously released as single discs in the late '80s and early '90s on Deutsche Grammophon. But this box set marks the first hybrid SACD release of historical recording selections. These new audio versions feature Esoteric's proprietary re-mastering process to achieve the highest level of sound quality.

Claudio Arrau (1903-1991) is a pianist fully deserving of the epithet ‘legendary’. His rigorous intellect and sense of the sublime found expression in his transcendent technique and sumptuous, yet lucid sonorities. The recordings in this 24CD collection, a significant portion of Arrau’s legacy from the years between 1921 and 1962, are indispensable to his extensive discography. They can now be heard in their full glory, thanks to a process of restoration and HD remastering using the original tapes (for recordings from the LP era) or the best available source (for 78s). Among them are four world premiere releases: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30, op. 109, a Chopin étude, and two pieces by Liszt.

Claudio Arrau recorded these concertos twice for Philips, the present performances in 1963, and then again in 1980 with Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony. There's very little to choose between them. Tempos are almost identical, and contrary to what one might expect, the slow movement of the Schumann concerto is actually a bit faster in the later version. Arrau's way with the music is wholly characteristic of the man: serious, even reverential (at the beginning of the Schumann), and played with drop-dead gorgeous tone. The result enhances the stature of both works, but the Grieg in particular. The climax of the finale has an epic grandeur without a hint of bombast that you simply won't find in any other performance. Dohnányi's accompaniments are also distinguished: he lets Arrau lead but isn't afraid to permit the orchestra to assert itself where necessary; and of course the playing of the Concertgebouw is top-notch. If you haven't heard Arrau in this music, it really doesn't matter which of his recordings you wind up with, but do try to get at least one of them.

Less than a year after «Avenir», Claudio Fasoli returns into a recording studio to lay down the remarkable progress accomplished with his new band, Four. He also returns to witness how serious his ideas have been. He tells Francesco Martinelli, in the recent book which Siena Jazz dedicated to him: “The choice of the electric guitar instead of the piano, changed the sound of the work… It is clear that with two kinds of sparingnesses only (of the electric guitar and the electronics) these two choices (sound and noisy color) can coexist…”. The absorbing personality of the Venetian saxophonist doesn’t alter or hide the great balance achieved by the quartet and the importance of the collective work. Fasoli furthermore specifies “They are songs composed by all of us, meanwhile in the past works, by tradition, I’ve always used my own music, but in this case, seeing the interest and contribution of the other musicians, we decided to play everyone’s compositions.”. The album opens with a long and articulated theme from the band leader, who plays his best cards at once, leading us by the hand through the meandering paths of a music that helps us to unveil, after each curve, new and surprising landscapes. Both the Michele Calgaro’s guitar – author of incisive interventions, coherent with the overall musical project – and the Gianni Bertoncini’s rhythmical imagination and expert use of electronics, attract attention.
