It was the logical extension of two of the most important and enduring pop music tributaries of the 1960s – the girl group sound and the garage band explosion, respectively – but the distaff garage rock scene has earned precious little documentation on record or in history books over the years. Romulan's long-running Girls in the Garage series has done much to rectify that oversight, however, compiling an astounding amount of prime crunch – the first CD volume in the series is also its strongest, adding 11 tracks to the 16 that made up the original vinyl. Like all garage collections, there are equal amounts killer and filler, and the joy of discovery is alone worth the price of admission – Denise & Co.'s "Boy, What Will You Do Then," the Belles' "Come Back," and Lydia Marcelle's "The Girl He Needs" are top-shelf by any standard, however, and the Continental Co-Ets' blistering instrumental "Melody of Junk" dismisses once and for all any lingering misconceptions that the girls couldn't rock as hard as the boys.

The full story of the incredible Janie Jones recording career, from her first big hit "Witches brew" in 1965 to her 1983 punk comback supported by "The Clash", who wrote "The House of the Ju Ju Queen" specially for Janie (and backed her on the single). As bizarre and eclectic set of singles as you would imagine from the woman dubbed "London's Vice Queen" by the News Of The World and jailed in 1973, this fascinating CD includes all her a and b sides plus several unissued numbers. The CD concentrates on her musical career with the likes of Jimmy Webb, Marc Bolan and others, and includes detailed notes plus loads of great pictures and cuttings, and a discography. The sixties have never swung quite like this before!

Bringing forth the cloudy reverb of Jesus and Mary Chain and the crunchy bite of the Velvet Underground, for Bare Mutants' In the Red debut, Affliction, frontman Jered Gummere (formerly of the Ponys) meshes a cool, dreamy palette with an ear for his own brand of pop jingles, which are simple and classic-sounding but still clearly cut from his own cloth. Getting musical support from veterans like Jeanine O' Toole of the 1900s and Seth Bohn of the Mannequin Men didn't hurt, and the other performers (organist Leslie Deckard, and drummer Matt Holland) do a nice job solidifying Gummere's vision.
