A middle-aged Irish bus conductor with a passion for the writings of Oscar Wilde causes controversy when he attempts to stage Wilde's Salome in this period drama set in early 1960s Dublin. Alfie Byrne (Albert Finney) is a well-liked local figure, a life-long bachelor who charms his bus passengers with dramatic recitations of Wilde's poetry. One day, he spots a beautiful young woman named Adele (Tara Fitzgerald) who inspires him to attempt to stage Salome with her as the title character. Wilde's play inspires outrage amongst the more conservative members of the community, who attempt to shut Alfie down. Rather than giving in, however, Alfie chooses to be true to himself, a decision that forces him to face his true self, particularly his feelings towards his young, handsome co-worker Robbie Fay (Rufus Sewell).

1985. Salomé Lerner vient d'écrire un livre sur sa vie. Elle passe à la télévision dans l'émission Apostrophes de Bernard Pivot, et celui-ci imagine aussitôt le film qu'on pourrait en faire. Un film tout en musique. Car, dans le jeune pianiste Erik Berchot, Salomé croit revoir son frère, pianiste lui aussi, disparu en 1943 dans un camp de concentration avec son père et sa mère…

(In 1985 Salomé Lerner publishes a book in which she recounts her life story. In a television interview with Bernard Pivot she agrees that her story would make a good film adaptation, a film entirely in music. Her brother was a talented pianist, which makes the tragedy of his death in a Nazi concentration camp, along with his mother and father, even more acute. Yet Salomé and her family came so close to avoiding this outcome. Living in Paris in 1943, they were able to escape from the Nazis, having been denounced by their concierge, and found a safe refuge in Dijon, at a chateau belonging to some friends, the Rivières. To avoid arousing the suspicion of the locals, the two families made it appear that Salomé was to be married to the Rivières’ son, Vincent. Alas, this idyll proved to be short lived…)

Pour donner à ce film quelque chance, la production confie le rôle de Salomé à une top model de renommée internationale. Mais dès le début du tournage, les problèmes s'accumulent…

Clive doesn't like Tom, because Clive was the one who put in all the friend coins and wasn't rewarded with sex and a relationship. So with Desmond's help Clive decides to start killing all of their friends and blame it on Tom, and then something something something Lauren will realise she really loves Clive. And maybe if they hang out together Clive will fall in love with Desmond. It's not the greatest of plans. And they're not the greatest of murderers. But they're going to give it a red hot go, because to do anything otherwise would make them cucks.

The minister of the town has died and his son Chad has no tears for him. Sarah, who now calls herself Salome, is pregnant with Chad's baby, but Chad has no future, no job and no money. Therefore, she leaves town on the train heading East. On the train she meets Tony who is heading back to Yale. Tony and his sister Catherine have one thing in common; they are both young, rich and bored with their lives. Salome goes to Yale with Tony and they are soon married, but she does not tell him about Chad or the pregnancy. Ruby takes Chad to New York where he plays trumpet and makes a name for himself. Catherine leaves school and moves in with Tony and Salome, creating tension between the young couple.
