He was known as ‘Mr Guitar’. One of the greatest and most influential musicians in country music, Chet Atkins was Cashbox magazine’s Instrumentalist of the Year from 1953 to 1971. Additionally, he was an RCA Nashville producer from the late ’50s through to the mid-70’s, masterminding sessions for Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Don Gibson, Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, Waylon Jennings, Jim Reeves and countless others.

Ruby & the Romantics have been poorly served by best-of collections, which are too brief and skimpy. This two-CD, 42-song set goes too far in the other direction, and not everything on here is exciting or worthy of multiple listens by any means. Still, too much is better than too little, and this does thoroughly cover the prime era of the original lineup at Kapp from 1963-1967. On the plus side, this convincingly demonstrates that there was more depth and quality than is commonly acknowledged to a group that is often remembered only for one song ("Our Day Will Come") or regarded as a lightweight pop-soul group.

The Very Best of Julie London offers an extensive overview of London's recording career with 50 selections she cut for Liberty Records between 1955 and 1969. The tracks are not newly remastered for the most part, but are taken from EMI's series of import two-fers and the domestic reissues Ron Furmanek and Bob Norberg produced in the early '90s. London was an album artist, not a singles artist she had only one hit single in her long career but she was a consistent favorite with adult contemporary and vocal jazz audiences and recorded over 20 LPs.
